What is more, if science ever gets to the bottom of Vodou in Haiti and Africa, it will be found that some important medical secrets, still unknown to medical science, give it its power, rather than gestures of ceremony.
— Zora Neale Hurston

A zombie in Haitian folklore is a soulless mindless dead body that is brought back to life by a sorcerer or witch who controls their soul and orders them around to do their bidding, typically menial tasks such as manual labor.

One turns a victim into a zombie by being given a toxic powder made out of pufferfish, a marine toad, a hyla tree frog, and human remains. The victim is then buried by the one who administered the powder. Their soul is then captured by the sorcerer or witch and their body reanimated, turning them into a zombie.

While the stories about the zombies are widely considered to be nothing more than tales related to folklore, plenty of people in Haiti believe them to be true, with some unfortunate victims being tricked into thinking they are one.
