A farmhand who fell in love with his mistress Buttercup, Westley set sail to discover his fortune in hopes to be able to marry her. Westley is believed to have been killed by the Dread Pirates Roberts. In reality, Westley inherits the title of Dread Pirate Roberts so that he may retire. For five years, Westley spent time as a gentleman pirate sailing the seas, earning his riches. He returns to Florin upon discovering that Buttercup has been forced into marriage with Prince Humperdinck. A trio of outlaws kidnap Buttercup, and Westley befriends two of them, Fezzik and Inigo Montoya, and kills their leader before reuniting with Buttercup, revealing his identity to her.
Westley and Buttercup are recaptured by Humperdinck after barely surviving passage through the Fire Swamp. Westley is taken by Humperdinck's vizier, but rescued by Fezzik and Inigo. The trio launch a sneak attack into Humperdinck's castle, where Westley rescues Buttercup. The four people flee the castle, with Westley passing on the title of Dread Pirate Roberts onto Inigo and marrying Buttercup.
