Herbert West, the mad scientist who, in the quest for immortality, created only mindless killing machines
Ryouko Tanbo, the psychiatrist who took on a mad doctor, a serial killer, and an alien horror with her sawed-off shotgun
Lovecraft's (self-described) most underwhelming creation takes on a doctor who literally killed a Lovecraftian Horror (admittedly with rather underwhelming capabilities as far as Lovecraftian Horrors go) to determine WHO IS DEADLIEST!?

Herbert West is a fictional character created by H. P. Lovecraft for his short story "Herbert West—Reanimator".. There have been several film adaptations of the story including Herbert West as played by Jeffrey Combs in the Re-Animator (film series) which include the 1985 Re-Animator film and its two sequels, Bride of Re-Animator and Beyond Re-Animator.
Being the inventor of a special solution that when injected into a main artery of a recently deceased person causes the body's mechanical, living functions to return, West dedicated his life to bringing the dead back to life. However, most subjects that have undergone the "re-animation" process have turned violent and, after failed attempts to return to their own graves, have terrorized the communities into which they were reanimated. Frustrated by his failed projects again and again, West would eventually go mad and resort to murder to gain "fresh" specimen for his experiment, creating chaos with his experiments where ever he went.
Several syringes filled with tranquilizers. West uses them to tranquilize his victims. For the purpose of this battle he will have three of them. They are ill-suited to attack an aware opponent due to their short length and fragility, however, they may be useful in a surprise attack.
West’s signature weapon is an ordinary shovel, with a length of about five feet and a sharpened blade for use as a chopping weapon similar to an axe. When used to strike a downed target, West is capable of decapitating a man with the weapon.
- Magazine: 7 rounds
- Caliber: .45 ACP
- Effective range: 50 meters
The M1911 is a semi-automatic pistol that fires the .45 ACP. The weapon is single-action and is recoil-operated. The famous firearms designer produced the pistol to be used as the standard sidearm for the United States military. The weapon was used through countless conflicts like World War II and the Vietnam War. Production for the weapon came through the United States' need to modernize its arsenal. It is still being used by American law-enforcement and military forces in limited amounts. A large amount of variants were made, the most popular being the MEU(SOC) pistol. 28 countries currently have the pistol in their arsenals.
Allies: Reanimators x 2
Reanimators, as suggested by their obvious name, are products of West's research and failed attempts in resurrecting the dead. These creatures come in the form of reanimated corpses that are either stolen by West from morgues and graves or people murdered by West. They came back to life because West injected his reanimator reagent into their bodies. For the purpose of this battle two of the creatures will be present. To be fair Doctor Hill won't be one of them because he would almost certainly turn against West. Strengths: Reanimators are smarter than normal zombies and some even retained their human intelligence, being able to pull off ambushes, set traps and even rebelling against West. They are incredibly durable as well, being able to tank heavy damages from pistol and rifle fires, as well as continuing to operate for a while even when their head have been chopped off. Their flexibitiy seems to be enhanced as well, as indicated by the fact that reanimators can preform ridiculous body stretching at times.Their main method of attacking is, as with most zombies, grabbing and biting, while they also possess wacky abilities such as spitting out disgusting fluids and shooting their intestines out to strangle/tear apart opponents.
- Weaknesses: Their heads are their major weakness, and they can be killed by gunshots or blunt force trauma to the head, as seen when West killed several rogue reanimators with a handgun and metal pipe. West’s control over them is limited. They can easily go rogue when their instinct get the better of them or when they remember West murdered their human past.
Ryoko Tanbo was a young psychiatrist at Tokyo University Hospital, who had only recently gotten her MD when she met Fuminori Sakisaka, a medical student at the university who was referred to her after he was in a car accident.
Ryoko could see no damage, however, she suspected something was off. Little did she know, there was substantial brain damage which, while in no way affecting his mental capacity, caused Fuminori to see humans as monsters and everything as covered in blood and gore. Meanwhile, Tanbou was also conducting an independent investigation of the strange disappearance of Dr. Ougai, and the disappearance of several infants in the university hospital.
The two cases would become linked when she and Fuminori's friend, Kouji Tonoo discovered the shocking secret behind the disappearance of one of their friends, Oumi Takahata. It turned out, Fuminori was in contact with an extradimensional alien that Dr. Ougai had brought into this world and named Saya. Finding out that Fuminori was working with Saya to turn humanity into Saya's species, Ryoko and Kouji began to hunt down the duo.
Ryoko's ultimate fate depends on the decisions made by the player. She either ends up surviving her battle against Saya and Fuminori if the latter is cured of his condition or Saya succeeds in turning the human race into her species, or dies but not before taking Saya with her. Alternatively in the "best ending for humanity", Tanbo succeeds in killing Saya before she transmutes humanity, but is soon after killed by Fuminori after her gun misfires.
- Capacity: 2 shells
- Caliber: 12 gauge
- Effective Range: Less than 50 meters
Sawing off the end of a shotgun barrel can increase the spread of the shot by removing the choke, as shorten the weapon, making it easier to maneuver in tight spaces. The downside of sawing off the barrel is that it reduces the effective range. For the purposes of this match, the shotgun will be a sawed-off 12-gauge double barrel shotgun.
Liquid Nitrogen Canister
When Ryouko Tanbou finally eliminates "Saya", she douses "her" with a thermos bottle full of liquid nitrogen, before shooting "Saya" with her shotgun, damaging "Saya" more than "she" can regenerate from. The container contained enough liquid nitrogen to flash-freeze a significant chunk of Saya’s anatomy, and while Saya is only about half the height of a human, it would still be enough to do fatal damage to a human (or zombie) target. For the purposes of this match, the liquid nitrogen will be a one-use weapon if used in this manner, but it will be assumed the canister will be sturdy enough to be used as a (admittedly not particularly effective) blunt weapon without breaking, or at least not immediately… That being said, it is quite possible that Ryouko may be able to find more liquid nitrogen canisters in the hospital, as the substance is used for medical procedures (though West may obviously make use of them as well).
Ally: Kouji Tonoo
Kouji Tonoo was a medical student and friend of Fuminori Sakisaka when Fuminori suffered a car accident that, unbeknownst to those around him, caused brain damage that drastically changed Fuminori’s perception of reality. After the accident, Fuminori saw the world as covered in blood and gore, and humans as horrific monsters.
After discovering that, in his insane mental state, Fuminori had murdered and cannibalized Kouji’s girlfriend, Oumi Takahata, Kouji attempts to hunt down and confront Fuminori, which leads him to confront Fuminori at the abandoned cabin of Dr. Ougai, where Fuminori attempts to murder him by pushing him down a well. Kouji, however, is rescued by Fuminori’s psychiatrist, Dr. Ryouko Tanbo, who has been investigating Fuminori and Dr. Ougai. Tanbo and Tonoo discover that Ougai had summoned an alien creature into this reality, an entity he referred to as “Saya”, and that “Saya” had later met and joined with Fuminori, who saw her as a normal girl.
Kouji goes to confront Fuminori and engages in combat with Saya, and also kills off their former friend, Yoh Tsukuba, who “Saya” had converted into one of her species. Depending on the player’s decisions, Kouji may be joined by Ryouko, in which case, Ryouko dies, but they succeed and preventing Saya from converting all of humanity into her species. If he does not call Ryouko, Kouji confronts Fuminori alone and he is killed in a fight with Fuminori, and soon after Saya converts all of humanity to her species.
Smith and Wesson Model 36
- Cylinder: 5-rounds
- Caliber: .38 Special
- Effective range: 23 meters
The Smith and Wesson Model 36 is a small "J-frame" .38 caliber revolver with a five-round cylinder. The weapon has a maximum range of 46 meters, but an effective range of only 23 meters. Ryouko takes the weapon of Dr. Ougai’s dead body and gives it to Tonoo.
Kouji uses a metal pipe as a melee weapon in his fight with Fuminori. Not much else to say about it- it's basically just a heavy piece of steel that can be used as a blunt instrument. Kouji seems to be a decent fighter with it, at least against an opponent with no hand-to-hand combat training, managing to match Fuminori while the latter is armed with an axe.
|Herbert West||X-Factor||Ryouko Tanbo|
In terms of physical strength, both West and Tanbo are in relatively good physical condition, but West shows greater feats of physicality, having literally severed a human head with a shovel (admittely while the body was lying against a concrete floor, but still), and killed a reanimator with a well-placed strike of a metal pipe. In terms of mental health, West is definitely lower, literally murdering people and trying to revive them in a quest for immortality, but is capable of acting normally and putting the facade of a normal doctor. Ryouko still scores better as, while she has seen some shit upon discovering the true nature of Fuminori and Dr. Ougai’s crimes, she is still largely mentally normal. In terms of intellect, I placed both of them at about equivalent, with both of them having passed medical school and gotten an MD (or Japanese equivalent in the case of Ryouko), so are clearly highly intelligent. In terms of marksmanship, Ryouko is can hit a target at close range, but she is not particularly familiar with her weapon, as noted when the gun suffered a misfire due to an improperly stored shell. In terms of stealth, Ryouko is capable of conducting a covert investigation, and also manages to ambush Fuminori by hiding in the trunk of Kouji's car, making it appear that Kouji arrived to confront Fuminori alone. West, on the other hand, is capable of appearing to be a normal doctor, all the while covertly committing murders and stealing bodies from morgues, as well as getting the drop on those that try to stop him, including a trained police officer. For this reason I give West an advantage as he has been hiding his activities for longer, and been able to hide more overt criminal activities and ambushed those seeking to stop him.
In terms of allies, Reanimators are more intelligent than your average zombie, but probably not up to the level of a presumably successful medical student like Kouji. In terms of raw physical strength, however, Kouji can handle himself in melee combat, as seen when he out-fights Fuminori armed with a metal pipe even when Fuminori is armed with an axe, but are still not as strong as West’s super-zombies which, because of their raw physical strength, also take the edge in terms of melee combat. In terms of ranged attacks, however, Kouji has the advantage of literally having a gun - admittedly being a Japanese medical student, he is unlikely to have used a firearm, and especially a handgun before given Japan’s stringent gun control policies, but even so, a firearm is a still powerful force multiplier, especially in the close quarters of the hospital, and going to do more damage than spitting whatever disgusting fluid the reanimators vomit at their enemies or shooting out their intestines (the latter of which could be severed and the neither is going to kill instantly).
- The fight will take place in a hospital that both West and Tanbou have been working at for the same length of time, making it effectively a neutral ground. Neither side will know precisely where the other is. Ryouko will accompanied by Kouji Tonoo, and the two may be separated, though they will be more likely to remain together. Ryouko and Kouji will start in the *West and the two reanimators will start in the morgue, and the reanimators will be instructed to hunt down and attack any intruders, and may be separated from each other and West.
- The hospital will have all the potential improvised weapons one would expect there- scalpels, syringes, bone saws, IV stands, fire extinguishers, compressed oxygen tanks, mops and other janitorial equipment, etc. Both sides may make use of these items as melee weapons. They also may make use of the environment in any way they could realistically think of- i.e. Ryouko using a wheeled gurney to block off a door to West’s reanimators, or shooting fire extinguishers or oxygen tanks trigger an explosion.
- Given the fight will take place inside a hospital, it is unlikely that either side will be using their guns at their anything close to their maximum range, meaning effective range will be less of an issue. In terms of stealth, A reanimator can lie still and appear to be a corpse, but once it starts moving, a walking dead body is not exactly subtle. Kouji, while by no means an master of stealth, is at least aware of basic methods like not turning on a light to avoid being spotted and parking his car in a blind spot of the house that Fuminori and Saya were using as a hide out.
- Battle ends some time after Halloween.
For the past few months, ever since that American, Doctor West, took a job at the hospital, bodies had disappeared from the morgue in the night, with no records of them being transferred to a funeral home or the coroner's office. After investigating along with Kouji, who had previously assisted her in her decidedly unofficial investigation of Dr. Ougai, she discovered that every time a body had disappeared, West had been at the hospital, with his car parked near the loading dock of the morgue, and sure enough, he was here today as well.
As soon as Ryoko Tanbo entered the side entrance of the hospital that was her workplace, with accomplice Kouji Tonoo close in tow, she immediately knew something was amiss. The lights on this floor were out, and the hospital was deserted. Even at the current time of 1:32 AM, there should have been a night staff on duty- hospitals never slept, after all, the injured or ill could arrive at any time. The morgue was hardly the most frequented area in the hospital, but even then, there should at least be a few technicians and medical examiner on duty.
"It's too quiet, and the lights should never be off", Ryoko commented, "Even if we lose power, we've got a double-redundant backup generator system. Stay sharp, we still don't know what we are dealing with here".
"Do you think it's something like... you know, like that... thing... with Fuminori?", Kouji asked.
"I can't rule it out", Ryoko said as she turned on her flashlight, "hopefully West is just selling off the bodies to medical schools as cadavers or something, I can't help but shake the feeling there's something more to this..."
The two walked down the darkened corridors of the basement of the hospital for a few minutes, not encountering a single soul, as they approached a a T-junction. Ryoko made a motion for Kouji to wait at just short of the junction. "On the count of the three, you check left, I'll the right", Ryoko whispered, "1...2...3!"
At that moment, Ryouko drew her sawed-off shotgun and turned right, and saw... nothing, just an empty corridor leading into the main supply storage and loading dock. From behind, however, she heard an inhuman roar, followed by two shots from Kouji's revolver. Turning on the spot, her flashlight illuminated a bloodied figure, appearing to be sporting multiple stab wounds in the chest and neck, attempting to bite and claw at Kouji's neck, with Kouji struggling to repel it.
Ryoko immediately pressed the barrel of her shotgun right up against the figure's face and pulled the trigger. The reanimated corpse was returned to death as most of its brain was blown out the back of its skull.
"Are you all right?", Ryoko called out to Kouji, as she helped him push the body off of him.
"I think so", Kouji said, "I think it's safe to say we know what West is doing with those bodies."
"If we see any more of them, aim for the head.", Ryouko replied as she reloaded her shotgun, "They seem to be able to resists shots to the body. Let's get moving. The sooner we put an end to this, the better".
Ryoko and Kouji slowly advanced down the corridor, with weapons at the ready, before again standing on either side of the doorway to the morgue, with weapons at the ready. View through the small window on the morgue door, it was immediately clear that this was the only room on this floor that was light.
On the other side of the door, West injected another dead body, a the victim of a car accident that had their stomach gruesomely turn open by a piece of jagged metal, with his resurrection serum. At once, the body began moving, but like the others, it showed no sense of its past self- the doctor had created only one more mindless zombie. "Damn... still not fresh enough!", West cursed as the door burst open and Ryoko and Kouji entered with guns in hand.
"Give it up, West, it's over!", Ryoko called out to the main standing over the autopsy table.
"Ahh.. Doctor Tanbo! I thought you might come meddling. I cannot allow you to stand in the way of science any longer, though I dare say you will be exactly the subjects I need!" At that moment, West drew his weapon, an M1911 pistol, out of his coat and ducked behind the autopsy table, firing two hastily-aimed shots, both of which missed, before sprinting out of the morgue through the second door on the west side of the room.
As West fled, the body on the table rose from the dead. The something unexpected happened, even for someone facing a zombie. As Ryoko took aim with her shotgun, the zombie shot its guts across the room, the intestines tangling tightly around Ryouko's neck and right arm, knocking her shotgun out of her hand. As the monster's intestines spun around her like a constricting snake, Ryoko used her free hand to throw a small metal canister at the zombie.
"Shoot... the... canister...", Ryouko struggled to speak.
Taking action immediately, Kouji raised his revolver and fired twice at the canister. The first shot missed, however, the second caused the canister to explode in a cloud of what looked like white smoke. As the canister burst, the zombie was doused in liquid nitrogen and collapsed before as it's body was flash frozen, shattering as it hit the floor.
"Dr. Tanbou!", Kouji shouted to Ryoko.
"I'm fine", Ryoko replied, "Keep moving, but be careful, I knowing that bastard, I suspect he has a few more tricks up his sleeve".
Ryouko and Tonoo ran after Dr. West, quickly reaching the western loading dock, which was mostly used by trucks from the coroner's office to deliver bodies. As they opened the door, they were greeted by three more gunshots. This time, two of these shots struck home, one hitting Kouji in the shoulder. Kouji retreated around a corner and clutched on the wound.
"Stay in cover and keep pressure on the wound, I'll handle this", Ryoko said.
About twenty meters away, Herbert West stood in a coroner's van, as along with one of his undead creations. "Kill them!", West ordered the zombie, however, it did not move.
"I said, ki...", West said, but his command was interupted by the reanimated figure turning towards him and lunging at him. The reanimated man, who had realized that West was the one responsible for his post-mortem torment, attacked the mad doctor, clawing and biting at his neck and face, trying to rip open his throat with his bare hands.
West's shouts of pain were interrupted by the roar of a shotgun blast, as his undead victim-turned-attacker's head was struck at point black range, killing them instantly. Ryoko then pushed the body aside and looked down at the mortally wounded doctor.
"You should have chosen your friends more wisely, Dr. West", Ryoko said, before she discharged the second barrel of her shotgun, finish West off with a shot to the head. Ryoko then placed her shotgun back into the shoulder holster beneath her trenchcoat, before turning her back on the scene of carnage, walking over to provide assistance to Kouji, offering her shoulder and leading him back through the basement, upstairs to the admission desk. After all, if you had to be shot, a hospital was probably the best place for it to happen.
WINNER: Ryoko Tanbo
Ryouko won this battle thanks to both her own capabilities and her allies. First off, she is more mentally stable than West, and has experience pertinent to investigating and engaging in combat with a psychopath with inhuman horrors as allies. Her sawed-off shotgun would prove more effective in the close quarters in the interior of a building, and her liquid nitrogen canister could prove useful to instantly kill one of West's Reanimators. Secondly, Ryoko's ally, Kouji Tonoo, is a normal human, which, while lacking in the durability and raw physical strength of West's undead minions, is more intelligent and can do more damage at a distance with his firearm, and will be far more reliable, as West's reanimators may betray him if they revert to their base instincts or remember that he is the one who killed them.
