Spartacus[]
Spartacus was a Thracian gladiator and the leader of the escaped slaves that fought against the Roman Republic in the Third Servile War.
Little is known of Spartacus's life before the events of the war, and most records are contradictory and rarely reliable, but most accounts on his origins agree that he was a Thracian mercenary who served the army of the Roman Republic, deserted, and was captured and enslaved as a gladiator.
Spartacus was brought to a gladiator school near Capua, where he was trained as a type of heavyweight gladiator called a murmillo. Along with seventy of his fellow gladiators, Spartacus planned to escape the school. In 73 BC, Spartacus and his companions armed themselves with kitchen utensils fought their way out of the school and seized several wagons of weapons and armor.
The gladiators plundered the regions around Capua, freeing other slaves to bolster their ranks and defeating the Roman legions sent after them. Despite lacking proper military training, Spartacus and his army displayed remarkable ingenuity when facing the Romans, using local materials and unusual tactics to overcome their enemies. With these victories, more and more slaves flocked to join Spartacus's army.
Alarmed by the success of Spartacus's rebellion, the Roman Senate commissioned Marcus Licinius Crassus, the wealthiest man in Rome, with ending the revolt. Crassus marched eight legions against the slave army, and won several engagements, forcing the slaves to retreat into southern Italy.
Spartacus attempted to broker a deal with coastal pirates to have his army sailed to Sicily, but he was betrayed, and was faced with Crassus's approaching army and no way to escape Italy. Spartacus decided to bring the full force of his army on Crassus in a last stand, which resulted in Spartacus's death in battle and the execution by crucifixion of the surviving rebels.
Spartacus led his men into revolt with:
Vercingetorix[]
Vercingetorix was a chieftain of the Arverni tribe during Julius Caesar's conquest of Gaul. Vercingetorix is remembered for forming alliances with other Gallic tribes, and leading them in a unsuccessful revolt against the invading Romans.
The revolt that Vercingetorix would lead began in 53 BC, when Caesar was away training troops. Seizing this opportunity, another Gallic tribe called the Carnutes attacked the Romans, massacring those that had settled there. Vercingetorix, who was only a minor Arverni nobleman at the time, roused his supporters to join the revolt. Most of the other nobles feared Caesar, and refused to take part. Needing a leader in the times to come, the Arverni chose Vercingetorix to be king. He quickly made allies, and was elected to be the commander of the Gallic forces.
Vercingetorix employed a scorched earth strategy, burning and destroying everything his army came across in an effort to drive out the Romans. He also won the Battle of Gergovia, in which the Romans were defeated and forced to retreat.
Vercingetorix attempted to give pursuit, but he suffered heavy losses and made for the stronghold of Alesia. Caesar regrouped and laid siege to the fortress. Vercingetorix's allies arrived to lift the siege, but they were repelled by the Romans. Out of options, Vercingetorix surrendered to Caesar. He was captured and held prisoner in Rome for nearly six years, until he was publicly executed via strangling as part of Caesar's triumph.
Vercingetorix fended Caesar's legion off with:
Analysis & Notes[]
My Edges[]
Daggers: Edge Spartacus: Well both are the same thing but the pugio is slightly longer.
Swords: Edge Vercingetorix: Again same story, his blade is longer and is capable of dealing more devastating attacks from both hacking, stabbing and slashing, while the gladius is better at stabbing and not so much at hacking and slashing.
Polearms: Edge Even: Both are essentially the same weapon, just different names.
Ranged: Edge Even: Well I am not familiar with the gaesum much, from what I found it has similarities with the pilum and that's why I call it even, I expect the pilum to get more votes.
Special: Edge Spartacus: The battle axe is more devastating and can be thrown, but you lose your weapon that way. The sica while is shorter and lighter and brings versatility to the table.
Armor: Edge Even: Both are wearing the same armor and while Spartacus scutum offers more protection is heavier and harder to move around, while Vercingetorix gallic shield is lighter and easier to move, but offer less defense than the scutum.
X-Factors[]
Experience: Spartacus 85/ Vercingetorix 82:
Little we know about Vercingetorix's past before the Roman coqnuest of Gaul, but probably have fought other gallic tribes before and the romans maybe. After that Vercingetorix spend his time fighting off Caesar's legions to drive them off the Gallic lands. There sources that say Spartacus was Thracian mercenary are reliable and I can't count them seriously. However I can say that he was both a gladiator and rebel and has experience fighting gladiators and roman soldiers. This was a though one but if we count the mercenary thing before he was captured/deserted, I think Spartacus has an edge slight.
Training: Spartacus 79/ Vercingetorix 86:
Don't get me wrong here! Spartacus was trained, but as a entertainer and not to be real fighter, the fact that he had instinct to fight and lead troops is good for him. Vercingetorix was chieftain and probably was trained good. He was possibly trained to fight on the battle field with sword, spear or axe, and not in the arena. So I think Vercingetorix gets the edge here.
Tactics: Spartacus 84/ Vercingetorix 86:
Spartacus was a great tactician and managed to cause big casualties with his rebellion. He won some engagements with the roman army and won the battle of Mount Vesuvius. He had extraordinary escape plan and his plan would have succeeded to escape if he wasn't betrayed by the pirates at Sicily and Crasus wouldn't have destroyed him. Vercingetorix managed to unite some of the Gallic tribes and managed to outsmart Caesar, one of the greatest tacticians of human history and even defeated him at Gergovia.
Audacity: Spartacus 89/ Vercingetorix 89:
Both leaders and their troops were not afraid of the roman legion, both fought Rome to their last breath. Both were ready to fight onward for their people's good and savety. I can't decide who gets the edge here in this x-factor. Unlike other chieftains Vercin was not scared of Caesar's legions and decided to drive him off Gaul, while Spartacus knowing that he had escaped, now Rome will want him dead, he still pursued his goal and fought onward for his people's good.

Battle[]
After a brutal attack from Crassus and his legions, Spartacus and his slave army was spread out and separated themselves from each other due to the brutal chaos that erupted during the slaughter between the slaves gladiators and the Roman army. Spartacus and nine of his men have escaped, but now they were trying in some way to find the others who have fled away.
Spartacus and his men have trekked through the Gaulish fields in some hope to find the other survivors. Little did they known that they were spied by Vercingetorix and his men. Vercingetorix spoke to his men that these might have been the Roman invaders they were expecting to come and ambush. As Spartacus and his men sat down near the river creek to have a sip, the Gauls ambushed them from the bushes. A valley of gaesums was flying toward the slave rebels. Spartacus ordered his men to raise their shields to protect them from the incoming spears.
The spears were blocked and the gladiators returned the favor with a valley of pilums, the Gauls raised their shields, but one of them wasn't so lucky and was pierced in the chest by a pilum. Vercingetorix raised his sword and yelled and led a charge. Spartacus raised his hasta and he also led the charge against the Gauls. As both forces were about to clash one of the slave rebels was taken by a flying battle axe, which landed at his head killing him instantly.
The two mini armies clashed, Spartacus impaled a Gaulish warrior with his hasta. Weapons clashed against armor, iron clashed against iron, flesh was grazed by weapons and cracks and damages started to appear on the armor. During the clash two of the slave rebels were killed by the axe and spear of the Gaulish warriors. Spartacus tried to impale a Gaulish warrior but his hasta was cut in half by the axe of that men, but the Thracian managed to smash him with his shield and with fast reaction pulled his sica and sliced the men's throat.
As Spartacus turned he saw Vercingetorix stabbing one of his men killing him in front of his eyes. Spartacus and Vercingetorix locked eyes and walked in a circle, while their soldiers were fighting. Spartacus in fury swung his sica at Vercingetorix, but the Gaulish king blocked the sica with his longsword. Both leaders clashed again with their blades and shields in hand. Spartacus got the upper and hooked the Gallic shield and knocked the chieftain off his feet with a bash from the scutum. Spartacus was ready to slay Vercingetorix, but in the last second he was pushed by one of Veercingetorix's men. The Gaul was ready to bash Spartacus with his axe, but the Thracian gladiator blocked the blow with his scutum, but from the push Spartacus lost his sica, well just in time one of his men knocked from the Gaul and stabbed him in the chest with his gladius.
Spartacus retrieved his sica back and was ready to slay his opponents. One his men was killed in the mean time by a gaesum. The slave rebels and the Gauls were battling it out, one of the Gallic soldiers and the gladiator rebels were fighting near the river and as the Gaul destroyed the man's hasta, what he didn't expect was a stab from a pugio in his stomach and after that being thrown in the river streams, with his death being secured now.
Spartacus and Vercingetorix clashed again with swords and shields in hand. Both leaders seemed equal in this fight, neither was getting an advantage, their blades either clashed against each other or against the shields. Both men bashed their shields against each other, with both losing balance but neither of them falling down. Spartacus charged at Vercingetorix pushing him down, as Vercingetorix felt down, he quickly pulled his iron dagger and pierced Spartacus in his knee, Spartacus yelled in pain, but seconds later his chest got pierced by the Gallic king.
Seeing their leader dying, the slave rebels in fear surrendered and began retreating, while the Gauls chase them and were attacking them form distance with gaesums, iron spears and axes being thrown at rebels, with two of the gladiators getting killed by the aerial assault of the Gauls. The last two survivors escaped narrowly, while Vercingetorix and his men gave a mighty war shouts in victory, raising their swords in the air.
Expert's Opinion[]
While Spartacus might have had Roman weaponry at his disposal, he was trained as gladiator and not a professional soldier. He was outclassed by Vercingetorix in every x-factor and Vercingetorix was overall better commander and fighter. I mean Vercingetorix defeated Julius Caesar once, Spartacus got destroyed by Crassus.
