Pint Sized Problems

Exactly 25 years ago to the day, the cartoon Spongebob Squarepants would release onto Nickelodeon, and basically change the channel forever. Spawning countless clones, merchandise, and now quite a few spinoffs, the show has been going on strong ever since it's conception. With it being a large part of my childhood, I decide to honor the legacy of the sponge by putting him in a battle to the death against a giant spider with a flamethrower. Oh yeah I also like Pikmin, too.

Titan Dweevil, final boss of Pikmin 2, and loyal defender of Louie, the King of the Bugs himself

and Spongebob Squarepants, minimum wage fry cook who had to save his home from the robot menace.

Titan Dweevil[]

Titan Dweevil allweapons
The largest member of the dweevil family, this fearsome predator carries protective components that frequently exhibit offensive capabilities, an evolution that may be attributed to mere chance. Another evolutionary theory is that the chemical contents of the containers carried by titan dweevils contribute to possible gene splicing. While other dweevils do not seem to choose the objects they carry, the titan dweevil appears to prefer shiny objects above all others.
— Olimar's log on the Dweevil

When Olimar's coworker Louie was abandoned on the planet PNF-404, he had to go back and get him. Assigned to the job, and accompanied by, the president of his company, the two would return to the planet in order to both obtain riches and to recover their coworker. Their search for Louie led them to the Dream Den, the final challenge that Olimar would face in the second installment of the game. Buried deep within the earth, this giant subspecies of Dweevil would be ridden, and potentially controlled by, Louie. Using it's four weapons, it fought back against the employees of Hocotate Freight, but would eventually be slain by Olimar and the President. Louie would be saved, and the weapons the Dweevil used in combat would be plundered for capitalistic gain.

Pikmin 2 is a fun game.

Flare Cannon
This scorching mechanism was once used by a monstrous titan dweevil. The roasting apparatus spews hot jets of flame!
— Olimar's log on the weapon

The Titan Dweevil has four weapons that it can use in order to cover all of the elemental damage in Pikmin 2. While these weapons are all being carried by the Dweevil at the same time, it is only capable of using one weapon at a time. When these weapons are damaged enough, they begin to mildly malfunction, becoming more dangerous to enemies as these "malfunctions" really only help the Dweevil defend itself further.

The flare cannon is a flamethrower that the Dweevil uses to, as you might expect, shoot flame out. When the Dweevil uses this weapon, it sprays out flame in a 180 degree cone in front of the Dweevil. The flames it shoots out are strong enough to knock around Olimar and the President, and keep them knocked prone. Considering they can take quite a bit of abuse throughout the game, that's pretty impressive. When damaged, the flames start to shoot out in a 210 degree cone, making it slightly harder to dodge.

Shock Therapist
This nanotech device gathers negative ions in the atmosphere and converts them into energy. It then releases that energy. Zap!
— Sales pitch for the weapon
The Shock Therapist, while intimidating in name, is actually just a Crookes tube that has somehow become weaponized by the Dweevil. When used by the Dweevil, it shoots out eight electric nodes around the battle field that will then connect to each other with an electric field, zapping anything in its way. The electricity does pack force, as it can, again, knock down Olimar. Out of all four weapons, it is the most fragile, requiring the least amount of hits in order to knock off the Dweevil. When malfunctioning, the Shock Therapist's nodes will immediately connect to each other the moment they are dispensed, making it harder to dodge.

Monster Pump
This savage water pump was just one of many weapons wielded by the titan dweevil. This pump is capable of spraying jets of hyper-pressurized water!
— Olimar
The Monster Pump is what you get when you attach a faucet to...a giant spider, I guess. Somehow, when the Dweevil uses the Monster Pump, it is capable of shooting giant balls of water across the entirety of the arena, splashing everything in water. Against the pikmin this proves to be particularly effective, as the water seems to cling onto them and slowly cause them to suffocate. Against a sponge underwater...well, who knows if that'd be as effective. When malfunctioning, it merely shoots out these large water bubbles faster.

Comedy bomb
You cannot see it. You cannot smell it. Yet this weapon would steal your life, given the chance.
— Sales Pitch
The comedy bomb is, likely, some type of bug repellent or fumigator that the Dweevil uses to try and gas out those pesky pikmin. When used in combat, the Comedy Bomb spits out three streams of noxious gas, and slowly spins around in order to cover the entirety of the arena. When the Comedy Bomb is sufficiently damaged, the machine will begin to spit out four streams of gas, and the rotation will stop and start randomly, and be able to change directions. It is definitely the most dangerous malfunction of the four.

Spongebob Squarepants[]

Spanchbob
I've got nerves of steel, and muscles of sand!
— Spongebob
Spongebob, well, lives in a pineapple, under the sea, in a town called Bikini Bottom. Frankly the yellow sponge needs little introduction, as he's the star of one of the most popular cartoons of all time. We're not talking about the cartoon today, though. During one of Plankton's many attempts to steal the Krabby Patty Secret Formula, he had created machines that were capable of replication an endless sea of robots. Unfortunately, like many of his plans, it backfired immediately, and now all of these robots are unleashed upon Bikini Bottom, causing general chaos and mayhem, and threatening to destroy Spongebob's way of life. With little else he can do, he goes out and saves his home, because even a hero can be square.

No Picture :(

Spongebob's go to weapon when he doesn't want to do anything fancy, his bubble wand is basically just something he swings around to break stuff. While there isn't much else to say about it, the bubble wand does give him considerably more reach than if he were to just use his karate skills, and considering that it can still get the job done fairly well, I guess if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

One of Spongebob's main tools against the robotic hordes is his ability to form bubbles into deadly weapons that can, somehow, smash the shit out of some metal robots. Because they are generally come from the same source, I'm going to just list them all here under the same category.

  • Bubble Bash: Spongebob forms a viking helmet on his head and leaps upward, smashing anything directly above him. Good for anything that's in the air, but incapable of hitting anything on the ground beside him.
  • Bubble Slam: While in the air, spongebob forms giant bubble feet over his own and slams down into the ground, breaking anything underneath him. He can also use this to get down to the ground faster, if for whatever reason he would need that.
  • Bubble Bowl: Spongebob reels up a bowling ball that is just one big bubble, and launches it forward. One of his main projectile attacks, he can use this to hit buttons, or enemies, from afar without putting himself directly in harms way. He can even ramp it off objects or terrain to launch them into the air.
  • Bubble Cruise: Spongebob uses his bubbles to create a guided missile that he can control. It moves fast, in comparison to spongebob, and can travel for about seven seconds before it blows up on it's own. It causes an explosion whenever it makes contact with the target. While controlling the cruise missile, Spongebob is incapable of moving around, and must either blow up the missile preemptively or ram it into the nearest object in order to start moving again.

Given that spongebob is a sponge, he can do some strange things, which is also further exacerbated due to the fact he, well, kind of has toon force. Not as present in the game, though. He can stretch a little bit and recover from pain quickly, and on top of that he sort of has to be constantly submerged in water otherwise he will dehydrate and quickly die. On top of this spongebob is capable of rolling up into a ball and moving much faster than his normal walking speed, making it an efficient way of getting around, should he need it.

X Factors[]

Physicality

The Titan Dweevil really packs a punch with his equipment, and while he's able to carry them all, which is impressive given their size compared to him, outside of his weapons he's actually incapable of harming anything. And I do mean anything. While it can lash out with its pincers against Pikmin, this seems to only be a way to get Pikmin off of the Dweevil, and it doesn't even end up killing the Pikmin. This means that, ultimately, the insect is a sitting duck without its weapons, incapable of hurting anything.

Spongebob is actually packing quite a punch in this game in terms of physicality. He can break robots with a swipe of his bubble wand, capable of sending robots even twice his size flying with an uninterrupted attack. He is also capable of taking a lot of abuse from things such as electricity, explosions (which can break stone tikis which are comparable in size to him), and just getting slammed by hammers or burnt by flames.

Intelligence

Well...this is a bit of a weak category. The Dweevil certainly shows to at least be somewhat intelligent, with the fact that it can actually use its weapons in order to defend itself, when their use isn't inherently obvious. It seems that outside of this, though, the Titan Dweevil runs on animalistic instincts, and only picked up the weapons it does have because they're kind of shiny and interesting, and just learned how to use them overtime.

Spongebob is, well, a dumbass, but a surprisingly capable one, at least. He knows how to fight, but generally gets tricked pretty easily and doesn't really understand anything too complex. He does, however, know when to hit the big glowing part of a boss in order to defeat them, so at least he has some basic video game knowledge on his side.

Experience

While the Dweevil is listed as a predator, we don't actually get to see it doing much outside of its boss fight. Presumably, it has been within the Dream Den for a while. Long enough to know how to use its weapons against prey and to be able to defend itself, but how much fighting it gets up to is up to speculation.

Admittedly the main reason why I have this category; Spongebob is actually pretty experienced in this game. He is capable of fighting countless swarms of robots, and has gone toe to toe with a giant jellyfish, giant mechanized versions of himself and his friends, and one of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy's villain, the evil Prawn. Basically, Spongebob's real used to fighting the odds and punching way above his weight class.

Voting and Battle information[]

You know the drill just give me a good decent vote.

As for the battle scenario; the battle is going to take place in Sandy's Tree Dome; a big bubble filled with air. Spongebob will be provided with a breathing helmet filled with water so that his need to be under the water won't be a problem during the fight (at least, not inherently). Considering that the size of the tree dome kinda just depends on the episode imagine there's enough room to have a good fight in the dome where both can move around freely without any issues.

Because Spongebob characters and their sizes kinda are...weird to figure out, for the purposes of this battle we are going to assume Spongebob is the same size, if not a bit bigger, than Olimar from Pikmin.
