Deadliest Fiction Wiki
The Wasteland is home to many legendary figures. From heroes such as Craig Boone and Brotherhood Elder Lyons to villains like Frank Horrigan and Caesar. Few, however, can lay claim to the fame of these heroes. Both stepped out of the comfort of their underground vaults and into a world scorched by nuclear fire, only to end up as heroes normally seen only in pre-War comics and television shows. Of course, I am talking about none other than the Vault Dweller, the hero of Vault 13 who slew the Master and inspired the creation of the New Californian Republic, and the Lone Wanderer, the crazy kid who set out from Vault 101 to find his lost father and saved the Capital from the genocidal Enclave. In this battle, East Coast meets the West when both wastelanders go toe-to-toe to determine who is the Deadliest Warrior.

Vault Dweller[]

FO1 is a pretty good game, though it defintly shows its age.
FO1 is a pretty good game, though it defintly shows its age.
None could stand in my way. I had a mission. I had a goal. I had a really large gun.
— The Vault Dweller

The Vault Dweller was an ordinary resident of Vault 13 before its water chip broke, meaning that it would only be a matter of time before the vault would be without clean water. Ultimately, the Vault Dweller was chosen to venture forth into the post-apocalyptic East Coast in search for a replacement. After numerous adventures, the Dweller was successful in his mission, but doing so uncovered an even greater threat than a lack of water supplies. Within the belly of the Los Angeles Vault, a mutant abomination known only as the Master was building an army of Super Mutants to conquer the Wasteland. Enlisting the aid of the Brotherhood of Steel, the Vault Dweller slew the Master and destroyed his supplies of FEV, ensuring no one could create any more Super Mutants. Sadly, when he returned to Vault 13, he did not receive a hero's welcome. The vault's overseer, although thankful for the Dweller's actions, feared his presence would inspire his fellow residents to leave and put their community in danger. Thus, he forced the Vault Dweller to leave his home behind and wander the wasteland.

Cattle Prod

Originally used for herding stubborn cattle, the Farmer's Best Friend model cattle prod it has also been re-purposed as a non-lethal weapon against humans, though is still capable of dealing a ton of lethal damage. In addition to the taser-like prongs at the tip normally found on cattle prods, it has been outfitted with a thick, electrified metal coil around the striking end, hooked up to a pair of batteries taped down near the handle.

.223 Pistol

A one-of-a-kind pistol created by the farmer Irwin who gave it to the Vault Dweller as a reward for taking back his farm. Made by modifying a .223 revolving rifle, the .223 pistol has all the power of a rifle in the compact package of a pistol. The .223 pistol features some vestigial elements of the rifle it is made out of, such as a double trigger.

  • Action: double-action
  • Magazine: 5-round cylinder

Assault Rifle

The AK-112 is an old model assault rifle, made obsolete before the Great War, though is still used by various wastelanders. The 5mm rounds it uses as ammo are described as 'high velocity', suggesting a very fast muzzle velocity.

  • Magazine: 27-round detachable box magazine

Plasma Grenade

A magnetically sealed plasma delivery unit, with detonating explosives that creates a blast of superheated plasma on contact.

Plasma Caster

The Winchester Model P94 plasma caster is a heavy energy weapon that fires superheated bolts of plasma, causing serious burns on soft targets and melting hard ones. In extreme cases, the plasma can cause spontaneous dissolution of the target, including the separation of soft tissues from hard ones or wholesale molecular destabilization that turns the target into a viscous green fluid.

  • Rate of fire: 180 RPM
  • Magazine: 10 shots per microfusion cell

Companion: Tycho[]

The way companions work in FO1 really sucks tbh
The way companions work in FO1 really sucks tbh
We Rangers hail from back east, what used to be called Nevada. Our heritage stretches back to the days of the Texas Rangers. We learn survival and combat skills in order to go out into the world and have a chance of surviving and making things better.
— Tycho on the Desert Rangers

Tycho was born into a survivalist community and the grandson of a Texas Ranger. His family lived through the Great War by hiding out in the Nevada badlands, where he learned everything he needed to know to survive in the post-apocalyptic world. Eventually, he joined the Desert Rangers and traveled the Wasteland to aid those in need. Tycho met the Vault Dweller in Junktown and was convinced to aid him in bringing the local mob boss Gizmo to justice. Afterward, Tycho joined the Vault Dweller in his quest to find a new water chip for Vault 13.

That crazy kid from Vault 101...
— Three Dog

Growing up in Vault 101, the Lone Wanderer was seemingly destined for a normal life as a vault dweller with his father James, but this was not to be. One day, James left the vault, something that was strictly forbidden. Believing the Lone Wanderer had something to do with this, the Overseer ordered his capture. Fortunately, the Wanderer managed to escape with the aid of their childhood friend Amada. Now in an unfamiliar world, the Lone Wanderer began to search for his father, going on many adventures along the way and getting involved in the conflict between the Brotherhood of Steel and the Enclave. After the Enclave's defeat, the Lone Wanderer left the Capital Wasteland, disappearing into legend.

Chinese Officer's Sword

Washington DC was filled with Chinese spies around the time the bombs dropped and plenty of their equipment survived, including the swords they used. Although stained with blood and a bit jagged from age, it is none the less an effective weapon. The blade is 80 cm (31 inches) in length and weighs 1.4 kg (3 pounds).

Scoped .44 Revolver

A Smith & Wesson 29 revolver modified with a scope.

  • Round: .44 Magnum

Tesla Cannon

A heavy direct energy weapon made to replace conventional anti-tank weapons, though saw limited production. The designs for the Tesla Cannon were found and modified by the Capital Brotherhood of Steel chapter during their conflict with the Enclave, who modified its designs to make it powerful enough to shoot vertibird aircraft out of the sky. It fires powerful energy blasts that explode upon impact which causes a 'shock effect' on its targets that deals damage over the course of 2 seconds.

  • Magazine: 1 shot per electron charge pack

Companion: Butch DeLoria[]

Tunnel Snakes rule!
— Butch DeLoria

The local bully of Vault 101, Butch ran a small gang called the Tunnel Snakes. After James and the Lone Wanderer's escaped Vault 101, a resistance movement against the Overseer began to grow. With his desire to leave the vault aligning with the resistance's goal to open it up, Butch joined the resistance. Ultimately, Butch got what he wanted as the Lone Wanderer's intervention allowed Amada to become the new overseer. Afterward, Butch moved to Rivet City where he decided to create a new gang. Having taken a liking to the Wanderer, Butch decided to join him on his adventures.

10mm Pistol

The N99 10 mm pistol was created before the Great War as the standard issue side arm for the United States military. Being durable and easy to repair, the N99 is very popular with wastelanders.

  • Cartridge: 10mm round
  • Magazine: 12-round detachable box magazine

Toothpick

Butch carries a stiletto-style switchblade as his melee weapon which he affectionately nicknamed his Toothpick. The Toothpick is about 23 cm (9 inches) and weighs 0.5 kg (1 lb).

X-Factors[]

Experience

Both the Vault Dweller and the Lone Wanderer are fairly similar in terms of the enemies they faced. Both had to do battle with mutated wasteland wildlife, feral ghouls, robots, raiders, cultists, and Super Mutants and had to journey into dangerous pre-War ruins and vaults. Though it is worth noting that while the Super Mutants the Dweller faced were better organized and were commonly equipped with energy weapons, the Super Mutants the Wanderer faced were physically stronger, if stupid and unorganized, and included giant Behemoths.

Additionally, the Lone Wanderer also fought the Enclave, who commonly use Power Armor and energy weapons, was forced to fight as a gladiator in the Pitt, had to fight Chinese soldiers in a pre-War computer simulation, and faced aliens onboard of their own mothership. Having aided Moira Brown in her research for the Wasteland Survival Guide, the Wanderer has become an expert in Wasteland survival. He also received some tips in defensive combat from Desmond Lockhart, a ghoul with hundreds of years of experience.

Physicality

Both protagonists are young men in their prime. They are also healthy and likely have plenty of chances to exercise and nutrition, having been raised in the safety of a vault. That said, the Lone Wanderer was subjected to a couple of helpful mutations during his journey, the most relevant being Ant Sight (giving him the enhanced sight and fire resistance of a giant fire ant) and Barkskin (making his skin as hard as tree bark, boosting his durability).

Experience

Born into a survivalist community, Tycho was taught everything one needs to know about surviving in the wasteland. Later he joined the Desert Rangers, presumably receiving further training from them as well before traveling the wasteland. He joined the Vault Dweller relatively early in his quest when they met in Junktown, who enlisted his aid in taking down Gizmo, the local crime boss, and journeyed with him afterward.

Butch lived most of his life in Vault 101. Although he was the head of a gang, it is unlikely he saw any combat as he largely menaced fellow vault dwellers (no relation to THE Vault Dweller), though he may had a couple of scuffles with the Vault 101's security guards when he joined the resistance to open the resistance to open the vault to the outside world. Afterward, he made his way to Rivet City and joined the Lone Wanderer as his traveling companion, though this was relatively late in the Wanderer's quest.

Physicality

If the SPECIAL stats for NPC are to be taken literally, Tycho has a 6 in Strength, 7 in Perception, 6 in Endurance, and 7 in Agility. Butch, meanwhile, has 5's across the board with a 4 in Endurance. Though since I am certain you have all seen the memes of Snuffles the Mole Rat being smarter than Caesar, a learned ruler, and the elderly Mama Murphy being stronger than the Super Mutant Frank Horrigan by now, so take them with a grain of salt.

Notes[]

  • Both protags (and Butch) will have a Pip-Boy. The model the Vault Dweller has gives him access to a map of the surrounding area along with the location of his enemies. The Lone Wanderer and Butch, meanwhile, can use theirs to see various status effects and use the VATS aiming system, which aids them in aiming their weapon.
  • I will be taken the Vault Dweller and Tycho from shortly after the events of the original Fallout and the Lone Wanderer and Butch from shortly after the events of Fallout 3 and its DLCs.

Scenario[]

Venturing outside the Capital Wasteland, the Lone Wanderer and Butch happen to run into Uncle Leo and stop to hear some words of wisdom from the friendly super mutant before they continue their journey. Meanwhile, the Vault Dweller and Tycho spot the pair chatting with the gentle green giant. Being unfamiliar with the mutant, the two mistakenly believe that Leo is a former member of the Master's Army giving orders to remnants of the Children of the Cathedral. After quickly dispatching Leo, the Dweller and Tycho shift their focus on the Wanderer and Butch, who jump to action to avenge their fallen friend. Having lost the element of surprise, the legendary wastelander and the ranger are forced to take their foes head-on.
