Tohru Adachi is a major antagonist in the video game Persona 4 and its spinoffs. A narcissistic serial killer wielding a supernatural power known as a Persona, Adachi hides his true nature behind the facade of a bumbling and dorky police officer.
As a police detective in the small town of Inaba, Adachi's misanthropic boredom was relieved when he discovered he had the power to enter TV screens. While assigned to protect a newswoman involved in a scandal, who rejected his advances, Adachi forced her into a TV where she was killed by the psychological creatures that lived within. High off the power, Adachi killed again shortly afterward. The police were stumped by the supernatural conditions of the killings.
Everything changed with the arrival of Yu Narukami, a high school student who had the same power as Adachi. Alongside his new friends, Yu entered the TV World and discovered the true cause of the murders. The group vowed to save the killer's future victims and bring him to justice. Eventually, the group of friends discovered Adachi's identity and confronted him when he fled into the TV World. After Adachi's defeat, it was revealed that both Adach and Yu received their powers from a godlike being who wished to learn humanity's true desire: whether to accept the truth or leave it hidden in fog.
Adachi was apprehended and confessed to his crimes, having developed a begrudging respect for the strength of Yu's determination and the power of his bonds with others. When given the chance to escape during another supernatural incident months later, he instead chose to aid Yu and his companions and willingly returned to custody afterward.
