Thor Odinson is a major character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He is based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, who is in turn based on the Norse god of thunder.
Thor is an Asgardian, one of the extradimensional beings worshiped by humans as gods. As the son of Odin, the king of Asgard, Thor was set to inherit the throne. However, his irresponsible attitude led to his banishment to Earth. In exile, Thor learned humility while protecting his newfound human friends from his jealous adoptive brother, Loki. During this time, he also fell in love with a woman named Jane Foster.
When Loki attempted to invade Earth, Thor, with the help of a group of humans known as the Avengers, thwarted him. Later, Thor saved Asgard from the evil Malekith, but this victory came at the cost of his mother's life. Renouncing his claim to the throne, Thor returned to Earth to be with Jane and to aid the Avengers. Upon returning to Asgard to investigate mysterious visions, Thor discovered that Loki had taken over.
With Odin dead, Asgard was attacked by Hela, Thor's half-sister. Thor and Loki united to stop her, but Asgard was destroyed. The warlord Thanos attacked the homeless Asgardians and killed Loki. Thor defeated Thanos with the Avengers. Afterward, Thor fought Gorr, a god-hating alien. Thor defeated Gorr with the help of an empowered Jane, but Jane lost her life. Thor decided to raise Gorr's daughter while traveling as an intergalactic hero.
