The Penitent One is the protagonist of the video game Blasphemous and its sequel. The sole survivor of a holy brotherhood, he is a silent warrior seeking to save a land transformed by religious guilt.
The land of Cvstodia was devastated by the Miracle, a force that twisted religious penance into physical monstrosities and curses. Worshipped as divine by the Cvstodian Church, led by Escribar, the Miracle was actually the creation of a false god known as the High Wills that exploited the people's faith.
The Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrow, a dissenting religious order, was massacred for opposing Escribar's rule. The Penitent One was the sole survivor, resurrected by the Miracle's enigmatic ways. Determined to fulfill his order's mission, he journeyed across Cvstodia, uncovering the Miracle's secrets and defeating its servants. Ultimately, he killed Escribar and the High Wills, banishing the Miracle, before returning to death.
Despite many peaceful years, suffering remained, and the people's prayers allowed the Miracle's return. The Miracle manifested a heart in the sky, poised to birth its herald. To protect the heart, the Miracle revived its most faithful followers. This resurgence also resurrected the Penitent One, who again set out to save Cvstodia.
Guided by the angel Anunciada, the Penitent One vanquished the Miracle's minions and ascended to battle the herald, the Incarnate Devotion. Recognizing that the Penitent One's actions symbolized Cvstodia's rejection of the Miracle, the Incarnate Devotion willingly died. Mortally wounded, the Penitent One ascended to the afterlife, his penance finally complete.
