Super mutants are a species of mutated humans featured in the Fallout franchise. They are born from humans exposed to the Forced Evolutionary Virus (FEV), causing them to grow into hulking giants with increased physical characteristics and immunity to radiation or disease, typically coming at the cost of their intelligence. Different variations of super mutant exist across the former United States after the Great War, with the difference being caused by the specific strain of FEV they were exposed to before mutation.
The first known strain of super mutants originates from Appalachia. These mutants were the result of experiments held by the Enclave on orders of President Thomas Eckhard in an attempt to raise the DEFCON rating of the region and gain access to its missile weapons. These super mutants were violent and exhibited little intelligence, making them a menace to the various factions that made Appalachia their home, even more so after their numbers increased from Dr. Edgard Blackburn's experiments. They were typically accompanied by floaters and mutated hounds and included giant behemoths in their ranks.
The second strain originates from the Mariposa Military Base in New California. They are the result of a mutant known as the Master to create a new race of humans better suited to post-apocalyptic America. This strain is less violent and even includes members with increased intelligence, which made them suited to integrate into regular human settlements after the Master's downfall, though they still face frequent discrimination. These super mutants include the nightkin, a subspecies of blue mutants that could turn invisible through the use of stealth boys, though the extensive use of this pre-War tech came at the cost of schizophrenia. The strain present in the Capital Wasteland was the result of experiments using the Evolutionary Experimentation Program (EEP), a derivative of FEV, in Vault 87. Like the Appalachian mutants, the Capital mutants are unintelligent, violent, and a major threat to the region they inhabit. This violent nature brought them into frequent conflict with the Brotherhood of Steel, who sought to eradicate them from the Capital Wasteland. They also include behemoths and are accompanied by other mutants known as centaurs.
The last known strain was present in the Commonwealth as was the result of the Institute's experiments with FEV. Though similar to the Appalachia and Capital strains in many ways, the Commonwealth mutants are slightly weaker but more intelligent, allowing them to craft more sophisticated weapons and armor. They are also more organized and capable of following a chain of command. This also made some super mutants capable of living among regular humans.
Battle vs. The Agency (Crackdown) (by 123chaseyoung)[]
In the not so distant future, a large city calling itself the Pacific City was rocked when 5 mutants suddenly bursting out from the sewers and causing havoc in the populace. Thinking that they maybe freaks, the Agency sent out 5 Agents to put a stop to them.
One Agent grabs his machine guns and sprayed some lead on a poor mutant.
The mutants retaliated by shooting rocket launchers at them but the Agents were too fast. While some rockets did hit them, the large explosion had no effect on them and one Agent kills a mutant with a well-placed rifle shot to the head.
The mutants started to flee from the carnage, and some tried to fight back using pipe guns. But again they were no match as the bullets just glances off the Agent's armor, and the latter fights back by shooting their flocket launchers at them, instantly killing two other mutants.![]()
Running for their lives in desperation, one mutant cooks off two mini nukes and throws them at the Agents before hiding in the sewers. The Agency were too confident that these little bombs will have no effect so they didn't tried to dodge. But the nukes exploded, destroying almost half of the city and killing three Agents.![]()

The last mutant that remained, a behemoth, resurfaced to the top and rejoiced at his apparent victory. He sees one Agent down on the ground motionless and he shoots at him in the head with his laser rifle before the former's shields can recharge.
As he rejoiced, he sees a lone Agent stands on the building and eyes him, before jumping off and performing a superhero landing in front of the super mutant. Pissed and cornered, the super mutant tried to charge at the Agent and fired his laser rifle but it only glanced off the Agent's armor. The Agent retaliated by suspending the mutant in the air with his mass driver, before putting a quacker in his face and launching the poor mutant in the ocean.
The mutant screamed as he flew away into the horizon and exploded into a big ball of flame.
Expert's Opinion[]
The Agency stomped over the Super Mutants because they were physically superior and has the better weapons. They also have the better x-factors such as training and experience.

Expert's Opinion[]
While the Super Mutants had much greater durability and arguably the most devastating weapon on the battlefield, it was ultimately the Spartan Rangers' greater intelligence and use of tactics that let them eventually whittle down their superhuman enemy and win the day.
