The Spanish Foreign Legion was formed on January 28, 1920. It was based off of the famous French Foreign Legion and accepted both Spanish citizens and foreigners wishing to fight for Spain. In the early 2000s the Spanish Foreign Legion was reformed into the new Spanish Legion. Over their years of existance, the Spanish Foreign Legion participated in the Rif War, the Spanish Civil War, the Ifni War, and the Yugoslav Wars. When it was set up it contained 5 battalions made up exclusively of Spaniards but some came from Cuba.
