The Smith and Wesson M76 is an American copy of the Carl Gustav m/45 submachine gun designed after the Swedish government banned the sale of firearms to the U.S. military in protest to the Vietnam War.

It was designed to be used extensively by special forces in amphibious operations. However, by the time production was started need for the weapon had largely diminished, and the M76 saw very limited combat use as a result.
