There is no such thing as a sabre tooth tiger. The correct name for these beasts is sabre tooth cats, and there have been many different species. The largest, at over 300 kilograms, is this one - Smilodon, which means knife tooth. Originally from North America, they came to South America two million years ago. The balance of life here changed as they took over the role of top predators.

Smilodon is an extinct machairodont subfamily of the felids. It is one of the most famous prehistoric mammals and the best known saber-toothed cat. Although commonly known as the saber-toothed tiger, it was not closely related to the tiger or other modern cats.

Smilodon died out at the same time that most North and South American megafauna disappeared, about 10,000 years ago. Its reliance on large animals has been proposed as the cause of its extinction, along with climate change and competition with other species, but the exact cause is unknown.

Battle vs. Unicorn (by Appelmonkey)[]

Deep within an ancient forest, a lone unicorn grazed from a bush that stood at the foot of a mighty tree. The sunrays reflected off her perfect white fur, making it almost seem like she radiated a soft, pure white light. She seemed unbothered by the distant cry of birds or the occasional rustling of small critters that skittered around in the underbrush. If anything, she was at peace. At last, she could rest and fill her belly before continuing her journey in search of a mate.

Unbeknownst to the unicorn, a lone smilodon was slowly approaching her from the side, hidden by a big patch of bushes. He had gone on for days without a proper meal and was salivating at the prospect of devouring the horned horse. Bit by bit, he crept closer and opened his jaws, ready to pounce and sink his teeth into the unicorn’s throat. Then, as he was a mere meter away from his prey, the smilodon felt a dry twig crack underneath his paw. Immediately, the unicorn’s head shot up and peered in the smilodon’s direction. Any normal horse would have made a run for it, and the smilodon expected the unicorn to do the same. Instead, her nostrils flared and she kicked at the ground with her right front hoof, in what the smilodon interpreted as a sign of aggression.

Hoping to avoid confrontation, the cat turned around and dashed off, to no avail. The distant sound of galloping hooves rapidly grew louder and louder until it drowned out any other noise. The smilodon did not dare to turn around to face its impending doom, giving it his all to outrun it, but it was no use. Soon the smilodon felt something pointed penetrate its rear end, causing it to open its mouth to roar in pain. All that came out of his throat, however, was the unicorn’s spiraling horn as she skewered the cat through his entire length, ending his life in a swift yet agonizing death.

Victorious, the unicorn pulled her horn out of the smilodon’s carcass and reared, kicking her front hooves into the air while letting out a mighty whine. A few meters away, a pair of primitive human hunters who had witnessed the confrontation exchanged a few nervous glances and quietly decided to forage for food elsewhere. It would be unwise to contend with such a mighty beast.

Battle vs. Unicorn (by Goddess of Despair)[]

The Unicorn plodded through the field, the moon above shining upon her. She looked to the left and then to the right before bending down and taking a bite of some grass. Behind her, a Smilodon crept up ready for an attack.

Hearing the beast, the Unicorn quickly took off galloping away with the Smilodon behind her. The Smilodon gave chase. Sensing the Smilodon gaining on her, she stopped and lifted her back legs. Before he could realize his mistake, the Smilodon leapt at the Unicorn, but she smashed him with her hooves.

The Smilodon collapsed to the ground, his largest left tooth broken. The Unicorn turned and stomped its front hoof into the ground, preparing to charge. The Smilodon managed to stand, just in time to be skewered upon the Unicorn’s horn.

The Smilodon’s flesh was no defense as the horn easily went through its body, sticking out of the other side of the beast’s chest. The Smilodon roared momentarily in pain, before succumbing to blood loss. Bending down its head, the Unicorn allowed the Smilodon’s carcass to slide off of her horn.

Hearing movement in the nearby bushes, she took off to escape another potential battle.

Expert's Opinion[]

The Unicorn was victorious over the Smilodon due to her longer ranged weaponry, superior strength, and combat experience.

The battle was declared invalid because the blog stated that unicorns are capable of fighting and defeating dragons, despite there being no stories about them doing so.
