Ahh, merciful goddess, mother of the Forlorn, who have no place to call their own... Please, bear witness to our resolve... Fire for Ariandel... Fire for Ariandel... And the ash to kindle the flame...
— Slave Knight Gael

The last of the slave knights, an expendable Undead fighting force, Slave Knight Gael fought in countless wars and battles throughout history until he, like many other outcasts, found his way to the Painted World of Ariandel, a strange realm hidden in a painting for all those that sought shelter. Gael formed a close friendship with the Painter, the child who would create the new world after the old had served it's purpose, and subsequently bore witness to the arrival of Friede, an exile from the Church of Londor who manipulated Father Ariandel, the ruler of the Painted World, into extending the lifespan of the Painted World. As the world rotted and it's denizens suffered, Gael set out to find a champion strong enough to put a stop to Friede's schemes.

He found his champion in the Ashen One, who he convinced to travel back into the Painted World and subsequently aided in their fight with Friede and Ariandel. After the Ashen One slew them both, the fire from the ensuing fight began to spread to the Painted World, ensuring that a new world would be created. But Gael, knowing that the First Flame was fading, feared that the Painter's magic would not be enough, set his sights on obtaining a piece of the Dark Soul to ensure that it would survive whatever came next. He began manipulating the Ashen One further, sending them into the Ringed City and helping them slay the demon princes guarding the entrance so that they could give him an opening to reach the Pygmy Lords, the supposed keepers of the Dark Soul.

As the Ashen One explored the city, Gael quickly found the Pygmy Lords, only to discover that they had been alive so long their blood, the vessel which carried the Dark Soul, had gone dry, rendering it worthless as painting material. In a fit of mad rage, he slaughtered the Lords and feasted upon their bodies, consuming the Dark Soul from them in desperation. It is in this insane state that the Ashen One finds him, and Gael, realizing the Dark Souls's corruption will overwhelm him, attacks them, leading to a final fight at the very end of the world. The Ashen One prevailed, and with his dying moments, Gael urged them to claim the Dark Soul from his blood and deliver it to the Painter. The Ashen One honored his request, giving the new pigment to the Painter while allowing her to believe her beloved Uncle Gael was still off an adventure.
