Shrek is an ogre living in a swamp in Duloc, happy with his solidarity, until Lord Farquaad forces fairy tale refugees onto his land. Shrek and his temporary roommate Donkey go to Farquaad's kingdom to ask Farquaad to remove the refugees. Farquaad agrees to do so if Shrek rescues the princess Fiona. He and Donkey do so, and Shrek and Fiona fall in love. Shrek brings Fiona to Farquaad, but decides to mount a rescue and declares his love for her.
After their honeymoon, Shrek and Fiona are invited to meet her parents, who disapprove of the marriage and conspire with the Fairy Godmother. They convince Fiona that Shrek is missing, when he has actually been turned into a human and kidnapped. Shrek eventually finds Fiona before she can marry Fairy Godmother's son Prince Charming, defeating her and living happily ever after.
