Shovel Knight was a travelleling adventurer trained in the ways of shovelry. He would strike out on his own, going on adventures alongside his close companion, Shield Knight. One such adventure took them to the Tower of Fate, on a quest to destroy an ancient evil amulet. Shovel Knight lagged behind Shield Knight, who would fight against Specter Knight's former identity, a treasure hunter named Donovan. There fight caused a magical backlash that ended up knocking Shovel Knight out and expelling him from the Tower. Believing Shield Knight to be dead, Shovel Knight retired from adventuring in grief, and took up farming. As the years passed, the Valley would come under the control of the Enchantress and her Order of No Quarter. Shovel Knight would learn of the opening of the Tower of Fate and set out to find Shield Knight.
Shovel Knight took off towards the Tower of Fate, running afoul of the Order of No Quarter, as well as his old rival, Black Knight, blaming him for Shield Knight's death. Entering the Tower of Fate, Shovel Knight learned that Shield Knight had been transformed into the Enchantress and resolves to bring her back to normal. After defeating the Order in a rematch, he fought the Enchantress and managed to free Shield Knight from the amulet's influence, teaming up once again to defeat the remnant of the amulet's power. The Remnant of Fate would injure Shovel Knight and attempt to bring the entire tower down. Shield Knight would hold it off, imploring Black Knight to save Shovel Knight. Shield Knight survived against all odds, resting beside the unconscious Shovel Knight at his campsite.
