My role is to guard this gate. I won't let you through alive, nor shall I let you out alive.
— Sasaki Kojirou

Sasaki Kojirō is a character from the Fate franchise who first appeared in the visual novel Fate/stay night. Unlike most Servants, Sasaki is a wraith rather than a genuine Heroic Spirit. Because Sasaki Kojirō was a fictitious swordsman whose history and feats are composted out of those of swordsmen whose names were lost to time, the man summoned in his place is in actuality a nameless swordsman whose history and skill comes closest to that of the fictional Sasaki.

In life, the man whose story would add to that of Sasaki Kojirō's was a farmboy who learned swordsmanship from a master swordsman, wielded a unusually long sword nicknamed Monohoshi Za, and developed a technique that allowed him to slash from three directions at once called the Tsubame Gaeshi, and had some sort of connection to Ryuudou Temple in Fuyuki-city. Despite his great skill, the nameless swordsman failed to become a Heroic Spirit and instead presisted as a wraith with his feats being atributed to Sasaki Kojirō. Because of this, whenever someone summoned Sasaki, the nameless swordsman would be summoned under the name of the fictional swordsman.

Sasaki would be summoned by Medae in the Fifth Fuyuki Holy Grail War to act as the guard of Fuyuki Temple, which acted as Medae's base of operations. During the war he would be slain either by Gilgamesh, Artoria Pendragon, or an entity known as the Shadow and used as a catalyst by Zouken Matou to summon the Hassan of the Cursed Arm. After all possible outcomes of the Fifth Holy Grail War were accidently merged into one by Rin Tohsaka, Sasaki was ressurected and continued to guard Ryuudou Temple. When Angra Mainyu made his first attack, Sasaki fought his dog-shadows alongside Medea and Souichirou Kuzuki.

He would also be summoned by Ritsuka Fujimaru as one of many Servants to aid them in the Grand Orders and by Makki in the timeline where everyone owned their own personal Servant and Holy Grail after the Holy Grail Wars ended after the Third World War.
