Sam Gideon is a veteran researcher of DARPA and the protagonist of the game Vanquish. Sam was a successful football player during his college years, but his career was cut short due to an injury. In the world where Sam lived, Earth's human population burgeoned to the point where nations fight for scarce resources. The government of the Russian Federation had been overthrown in a coup d'état by a section of the military, calling themselves the Order of the Russian Star. They captured a space station known as Providence and used the microwave transmitter to devastate San Francisco. Sam was working with Professor Francois Candide at the time, designing what would become the Augmented Reaction Suit (ARS). The President of the United States, sent Lieutenant Colonel Robert Burns to infiltrate the station, along with the Bravo Company, an army of space Marines. They also recruited Sam Gideon, hoping to benefit from his knowledge and expertise in technology. Sam was given classified orders to rescue scientist Dr. Francois Candide, whom Zaitsev kidnapped.
