Rudolph van Richten is a doctor and vampire hunter hailing from the realm of Darkon within the Forgotten Realms. He is a mjaor figure in the setting of Ravenloft, most recently appearing as a potential companion and mentor figure in the 5e Module Curse of Strahd.
Van Richten originally hailed from Darkon, where he would become educated in medicine and marry his childhood sweetheart. The two would have a son named Erasmus, and things would look good for Rudolph, or at least before the vampire lord Baron Metus took interest in his Erasmus. Taking Erasmus and infecting him with vampirism, Van Richten was forced too kill his son to end his misery. In response to this, Metus killed Van Richten's wife, prompting Van Richten go kill Metus in retaliation.
From here, Rudolph would take too the life of vampire and monster hunting, gaining a legendary reputation across Faerun. After decades, Van Richten would eventually decide to go for the ultimate vampire target, Strand Von Zarovich, the vampire lord of Barovia. Under the guise of Rictavio, Van Richten would fail in his attempts too kill Strahd in a direct fight, being forced to hide out in the town of Vallaki. Here, he would eventually meet the party (whoever they might be), aiding them in finally slaying Strahd and freeing Barovia from his wrath.
