Robert Fischer is the only son of the business tycoon Maurice Fischer. Stuck in his father's shadow and reputation, Fischer intends to take his father's company and outbuy or undersell his competition to monopolize. Fearing this, his future competitor Saito hires Cobb's team to implant the idea in Fischer's head to dissolve his father's company instead.
The team penetrates Fischer's dreams, but end up fighting for their lives when they learn that Fischer has trained his subconscious to defend itself. They take Fischer with them into the deeper dream levels, fighting off manifestations of his subconscious the entire time. The plan nearly works until a cognitive version of Mal, Cobb's ex-wife, kills Fischer and sends him to limbo. Cobb "kills" himself to go into limbo, where he brings Fischer back to reality at just the right time. With the idea implanted in his head, Fischer wakes up a new man and dissolves his company.
