Purna Jackson is one of the playable protagonists in the video games Dead Island and Dead Island: Riptide. An ex-cop working as a bodyguard on an island resort, Purna is caught in the middle of a zombie outbreak.
A half-Aborigine woman, Purna battled discrimination as she worked her way up to the rank of vice detective in the police department of Sydney, Australia. Purna investigated a man who was molesting his daughter but was unable to charge him due to his political influence. Fed up with the justice system, Purna shot the man and was fired for it. Purna took up a job as a bodyguard on the island resort of Banoi.
The night after a party, Purna awoke to discover that Banoi was overrun with zombies. Purna was one of the few people with immunity to the zombie virus and teamed up with three other survivors to escape. The survivors were aided by Ryder White of Banoi's security team, who helped them to create a vaccine in hopes of saving his zombified wife. White betrayed the survivors, intending to save himself and his wife and leave the other survivors to die in a nuclear strike. The survivors killed White and escaped on a helicopter.
The survivors were arrested by an Australian Defence Force ship, which was quickly overrun with zombies, leaving the survivors stranded again on the island of Palanai. On Palanai, the survivors discovered the truth behind the outbreak: the virus was actually a bioweapon being tested and both islands were soon to be nuked to cover the evidence. However, Purna and the others were able to escape on a boat.
