It turns out that giving convicts a bunch of dynamite and blasting powder isn't the best idea.

The Powder Gangers are a minor faction in the video game Fallout: New Vegas. They are a gang of bandits that derrive their name from their use of dynamite and occupy the former NCR Correctional Facility in the Mojave Wasteland. They are lead by Eddie.

When the New California Republic moved into the Mojave Wasteland, they decided to use prisoners to in a work-release program to maintain the railroad alongside the Long 15. As the war between the NCR and Caesar's Legion escalated a large portion of the guards overseeing the prisoners were redeployed to the Colorado River. Sawing his chance, Samuel Cooke organized a riot, during which the prisoners blasted out of their cellblock, overwhelmed the remaining guards, and killed the warden. Afterwards, Cooke split off with his followers and took residence in Vault 19, while Eddie remained in the Correctional Facility and formed the Powder Gangers, though Cooke's faction would also come to be associated with the name.

The Powder Gangers proved to be more than trouble for the nearby towns of Goodsprings, Sloan and Primm, which they frequently terrorized. The Powder Gangers would also steal Sloan's dynamite supply, shutting down Quarry Junction and inadvertently unleashing deathclaws on the quarry and the Highway 93. Meanwhile, Cooke planned to use the sulfur underneath Vault 19 and the wildlife of the surrounding area to wage war on the NCR, but faced opposistion from Philip Lem, who began to second guess their crusade. This caused confusion within their ranks, as the convicts were uncertain to whom they should listen to.

The ultimate fate of the Powder Gangers depend on the actions taken by the Courier. Either the Powder Gangers were wiped out or remained a threat for the Mojave's citizens. As for Cooke's faction, they would either be scattered to the winds, surrender to the NCR, or join the Great Khans.

Expert's Opinion[]

Our experts believed, though the Lemoyne Raiders were trained by war veterans, they lacked the same hard experience as the Powder Gangers, and while the raiders had enough firepower to keep a fight going, the faster reloading weapons of the powder gangers was enough for them to prevail.
