A Moorish prince who served as an ambassador in Venice, Othello 's bravery and skill in battle eventually sees him promoted to a prestigious general in the Venetian army. He spends many years in Venice, earning the respect and admiration of many in the city. When Othello meets the senator Brabantio at his home, he meets the senator's daughter Desdemona. After regaling her of his exploits and his life before ascending to his position, the pair fall in love, secretly marrying despite Desdemona's betrothal to nobleman Roderigo. This initially angers Brabantio, who is told by Othello's jealous ensign Iago about the elopement. Othello is brought before the rest of the senators after Brabantio accuses him of witchcraft, but he makes his case and Desdemona publicly declares their love. After he successfully defends himself, Othello leads the Venetian army to defend the island of Cyrpus from the Turkish army.
After Othello and his regiment successfully hold the island, he is manipulated by Iago into believing that Desdemona is having an affair with Cassio, a newly promoted captain and Iago's rival for the position. Othello witnesses Cassio receiving gifts from Cassio's secret lover, the courtesan Bianca, mistaking it for Desdemona's favor. Enraged at the perceived betrayal, Othello vows to kill Desdemona, tasking Iago to kill Cassio. Although the latter assassination attempt fails, Othello berates Desdemona in front of their guests before smothering her in their bed. After he kills her, Othello is discovered by the various nobles of the court, and discovers Iago's plot when Iago's wife Emilia reveals the treachery. Dismayed at murdering his wife, Othello attacks Iago before committing suicide.
