“ | Can you smell that? All the Christmas spirit in the air? You could practically choke on it. But scratch the surface and there you have it, our true selves, people hiding behind their bright, colorful wrappings of bullshit, hoping that it will hide what they really are deep down inside underneath it all... Empty boxes of broken toys.

A proud member of the NYPD, the nature of Nick Sax's work wore heavily on his psyche, leading him to alcoholism, drug use, and an affair with his partner, Meredith McCarthy, which endangered his relationship with his wife, Amanda. Nick's downward slide hit it's peak when he discovered a repeat offender had been abusing his wife, with Nick subsequently forcing his way into the man's home to discover that he had murdered his infant child. Enraged, Nick nearly beat the suspect to death. The incident proved to be the final straw, leading to the department firing him and Amanda divorcing him upon discovery of his affair with Meredith. With nothing left, Nick fell harder into his vices, becoming a hitman with a deeply cynical worldview.
This continues for a few years until Nick takes a job to assassinate four brothers of the powerful Scaramucci family, luring all of them into an ambush and subsequently gunning them down/ As he dies, Mikey, the youngest of the brothers, attempts to give Nick "the secret" that has given the family their power. This effectively marks Nick for death, forcing him to go on the run, and things become further complicated when he is approached by Happy, a blue, flying unicorn that claims to be the imaginary friend of his daughter, Hailey, who has been kidnapped by a serial killer named "Very Bad Santa". Unaware he had a daughter, Nick initially rebuffs Happy, but reluctantly agrees to work with him once he proves Hailey is his.
Their efforts take them all across the shadiest elements of New York, with Nick clashing with Scaramucci hitmen, triads, and even an ambush from Very Bad Santa, who is revealed to be working alongside Blue, the head of the Scaramucci Family. Happy's repeated attempts to bring out the better person in Nick end up driving him into sending the imaginary friend away, leading to his capture by the imaginary friend of Blue's son, Gerry, just as Nick discovers the undead Mikey, kept alive by the power of "the secret". Using Mikey as leverage, Nick attempts to secure Hailey's freedom, but Mikey manages to escape, robbing him of his leverage and nearly leading to his death if not for the intervention of Happy. With a newfound appreciation for each other, Nick and Happy work with McCarthy to storm an event hosted by Sonny Shine, a beloved children's entertainer who is secretly bankrolling the kidnapping and Blue's operations, and manage to rescue most of the kidnapped kids, save for Hailey, who they just missed.
Nick and Happy manage to trace Very Bad Santa back to his warehouse and arrive just as he is about to lobotomize Hailey with a power drill so that she can stay "forever young". Sax fights Very Bad Santa, nearly winning until a poorly timed heart attack nearly kills him. He is saved by Happy and a group of lost imaginary friends, who attack the killer to avenge their children, giving Nick enough time to recover and kill him. As he recovers thanks to Hailey giving him his pills, Nick collapses, and is rumored by many to have died. In reality, he quietly recovered, putting the hitman life behind him in favor of repairing his relationship with Hailey and Amanda, with Happy now working as his guardian to keep him on the straight and narrow.
