Following his defeat at the hands of his twin brother Dante, Vergil, son of the legendary demon warrior Sparda, cast himself into the depths of the Underworld, where he wandered in a weakened state until he stumbled upon Mundus, Prince of Darkness, who had been sealed away by Sparda decades prior. Vergil, believing himself capable, challenged Mundus, and was subsequently defeated, losing his sword, the Yamato, in the process. Now a prisoner of Mundus, Vergil was tortured and forcibly enclosed within the Black Knight armor, ultimately breaking as his will and very mind were taken from him. Reduced to a shadow of his former self, Vergil became Nelo Angelo.
Nelo Angelo would get the opportunity for a rematch when Dante, lured in by Trish, arrived on Mallet Island, where Sparda had managed to seal Mundus away. He quickly challenged his brother to a duel within the castle gardens and initially won, but was unable to land the killing blow after recognizing Dante's half of the Perfect Amulet, a gift given to them by their mother when they were children. The two would clash two more times as Dante explored the island, with Nelo Angelo unmasking himself and unleashing his full strength for the final battle. Despite his power, Nelo proved no match for Dante, and he vanished in a burst of flame, leaving only his half of the amulet behind.
The destruction of Nelo Angelo somehow enabled Vergil, badly injured, to return, eventually escaping the Underworld decades later and hatching a plan to sever his human and demonic halves in a bid to grow even stronger.
