They were your friends, weren’t they? So lovely, so wonderful… so easily broken.
— Miku Izayoi

Miku Izayoi is a major character in the light novel and anime Date A Live. Miku was an ordinary teenage girl with a talent for singing sufficient that she got a contract with a major production company by the time she turned 15 and acquired a large following. Miku suddenly fell from grace after a false scandal fabricated by a perverted TV producer who tried to convince her to have sex with him in exchange for his advancing her career, and sexually assaulted her. Miku fled the producer’s office and never contacted him again. This instituted severe androphobia in Miku, and a general misanthropic outlook, believing everyone was simply using other people to get something they wanted out of them, and also rendered her effectively a lesbian as she feared and hated all men. Not long after, Miku was approached by the Spirit of Origin and became a Spirit with the power to hypnotize people into obeying her with her singing. For a period after this, Miku would attend an all-girls school, and use her powers to amass a group of female followers she used as her lovers and servants, but felt little real affection for them.

When Shido Itsuka is sent by Ratatoskr to seal Miku’s Spirit powers using his a abilities, which required that Shido make her fall in love with him, Shido was forced to use a fake voice and crossdress, taking on the alternate name “Shiori” for his female alter-ego. Miku attempts to mind control and then to seduce “Shiori", but she soon finds that “she” is immune to her powers. Miku challenges the disguised Shido to a challenge in a join talent show with Raizen, the school attended by Shido and the other sealed Spirits. If Miku won, “Shiori” would transfer to her school and become part of Miku’s “harem”. While Miku wins the singing competition, Raizen wins overall and Miku flies into a rage. Miku used her powers to mind control the entire audience, including the other sealed Spirits, and orders them to immobilize “Shiori”, at which point Miku gropes the restrained “Shiori” and discovers his true identity. Miku attempts to kill him, but Shido is rescued by Kurumi Tokisaki, who demands that Miku stay out of their way while they attempt to assault the Deus Ex Machina Industries facility where another Spirit, Tohka Yatogami is held captive.

Miku, confused as to Shido’s intentions, believing no human, and especially not a man, was capable of truly selfless actions. Out of curiosity, Miku follows Shido and tries to figure out what his inner selfish desires were. Thinking he simply desired Tohka sexually, Miku tries to convince him to abandon his mission by offering all the girls he could want. Shido refuses and continues, being wounded and apparently killed by a DEM agent in front of Tohka, who goes insane and “inverts”. Shido survives the wound thanks to the power of the sealed Spirits within him, however, stands in front of Miku, preventing an inverted Tohka from attacking her. This act of selflessness convinces Miku that Shido is genuinely a good person.

After Shido rescues Tohka and reverses her inversion, Miku confesses that she has fallen in love with him after he protected her, and allows him to seal his powers by kissing her. While she is very affectionate towards Shido and less cold-hearted, Miku remains mistrusting of other men, and is also still very much bisexual, hoping that Shido’s “harem” can be hers as well.
