I have people waiting for me. They don't know what I do; they never will. They're protected, but I do what I do so they can have a better life.
— Mike Ehrmantraut

Michael "Mike" Ehrmantraut is a major character in the TV show Breaking Bad and its prequel series Better Call Saul. A former Philadelphia police officer, Mike works as a corporate security officer, private investigator, and hitman for Los Pollos Hermanos, a front business used for drug distribution by Gus Fring.

Mike's son, Matt, was also a police officer. Matt was offered a share of dirty money by his partner. Mike advised Matt to accept for his safety but Matt was murdered by two corrupt cops. Devastated, Mike killed the cops responsible and left for Albuquerque to live near his daughter-in-law and granddaughter. Mike became involved with members of the Cartel and helped Nacho Varga, a subversive enforcer, to get Tuco Salamanca, a violent drug lord, imprisoned.

Mike's deal with Nacho got his family threatened by the Cartel, prompting Mike to use his skills in a one-man war against the Cartel's operations. Mike's abilities caught the interest of Gus Fring, a drug kingpin working for the Cartel who secretly desired the Cartel's destruction, who hired him. Mike proved vital as Fring's power grew, he enlisted expert methamphetamine cooks Walter White and Jesse Pinkman, and he successfully wiped out the Cartel's leadership.

Tensions between Fring and Walter resulted in Walter assassinating Fring and Mike reluctantly joined Walter and Jesse's new meth empire to support his family. The police caught on to Mike, forcing him to go into hiding. As he prepared to leave, Mike insulted Walter's pride and his decision to kill Fring, enraging Walter into fatally shooting him.
