Saint Michael the Archangel is the commander of the armies of Heaven in Judeo-Christian teachings, and the patron saint of the military and police. He is also the only person, according to the Bible, to have actually defeated Satan in combat.
In the Book of Revelation, the angel Lucifer (meaning "lightbringer") is said to have grown to be one of the most powerful of God's angels, but still desired more power and grew jealous of God. Amassing an army of loyal angels, Lucifer became known as Satan (meaning "adversary") and led his army against God's angels, commanded by Michael. Michael proved the victor, and threw Satan out of Heaven, where he and his angels, now demons, made their residence in Hell.
Michael, who also fought a large number of other powerful demons, is usually depicted in his greatest moment of glory, stomping on Satan's head and driving it into the dust.
