Mega Man X, known in Japan as Rockman X, and commonly referred to as simply X, is the protagonist of the video game series of the same name. He is the successor of the original Mega Man, S-class Maverick Hunter, and Dr. Thomas Light's greatest creation, being the very first Reploid, a robot with true AI. In his mission to protect Reploids and humans alike, X often fights alongside fellow Hunters Zero and Axl. Because Dr. Cain used X's general architecture as the basis for subsequent Reploids, X is seen as their proverbial "father".
X was created by Dr. Light as part of his life's mission to create robots capable of free thought and self-improvement. However, Light feared that that his creation would be without a moral compass to guide him and in 18 September 20XX, Light sealed X away and subjected him to a series of ethical testing. This process which lasted 30 years, even outlasting Dr. Light. A 100 years later, long after Light's passing, X passed the test and was awoken by Dr. Cain, who used X to create more sentient "Reploids" like him.
However, these Reploids didn't go through to the same ethical testing and were subjected to various malfunctions which caused them to act strangely, even becoming violent and attacking humans and fellow Reploids. These robots were dubbed "Mavericks" by the human government and a force of Maverick Hunters was created to deal with the threat with Cain's magnum opus, Sigma, was made its commander. X, meanwhile, struggled to live in this world as he still questioned what purpose Light had in mind for him.
The world forever changed when Sigma himself became a Maverick and launched a worldwide rebellion with the aim of wiping out humanity. Feeling partially responsible for the tragedy that has occurred and having learned of Light's dream of human/robot coexistence, X joined the Maverick Hunters in their fight against Sigma, eventually becoming one of its greatest Hunters.
