The MAT-49 submachine gun was a French weapon designed for military use during the 1950's and 1960's until it was replaced by the FAMAS assault rifle. It had a retractable wire stock for ease of portabilty and it was popular with insurgents in Southeast Asia, notably the Viet Cong. It saw use during the Algerian War, the First and Second Indochina Wars (the Vietnam Wars), and the Suez Crisis.
