I am a Jedi, like my father before me.
— Luke Skywalker

Luke Skywalker was a great Jedi master, the son of Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala. After his mother Padme died in wedlock and his father turned to the Dark Side to become Darth Vader, Luke was taken by Anakin's former teacher Obi-Wan Kenobi to Tatooine, where he was raised by his uncle Owen Lars. He was raised to believe that his father had died in the Clone Wars, and that he was an ordinary farmer.

This changed when Princess Leia Organa of Alderaan sent the two droids R2D2 and C3PO to Obi-Wan, who had at that point changed his name to Ben to better hide from the Empire, with a message that she needed rescued. Owen had bought the droids, and Luke took them to Ben Kenobi, but his uncle and aunt were killed by stormtroopers while Luke was away. Ben reluctantly revealed a version of the truth to Luke, telling him that his father was a Jedi knight and that Luke had the power of the Force. Luke, Ben, and the droids left Tatooine with the help of smuggler Han Solo and his co-pilot Chewbacca.

The group rescued Princess Leia, but at the cost of Kenobi's life. Luke and the others join the Rebel Alliance, with Luke becoming a valued member as he started to grow his talents and connection with the Force. He participated in several battles during the war, including the destruction of the first Death Star and the battle of Endor. He also discovered that Darth Vader was his father and that Leia was his sister. In the final battle aboard the Death Star, Luke battled Vader and Emperor Palpatine, convincing Vader to kill Palpatine and reembrace the Light Side, before Vader himself died of his wounds.

In the aftermath of the war, Luke refounded the Jedi Order, taking on numerous apprentices including his sister for a brief period, and eventually his nephew, Ben Solo. While training Ben, Luke was influenced by the powerful Dark Side user Emperor Snoke into believing that Ben had already been corrupted by the Dark Side. In a moment of weakness, Luke frightened the young Solo into attacking him, and was defeated by Ben and unable to rescue his other pupils.

Ashamed of his weakness and inability to protect his students, Luke exiled himself to Ahch-To for six years until the Force-sensitive scavenger Rey and his old friend Chewbacca found him. Luke reluctantly attempted to teach her the ways of the Force, in an effort both control her powers and attempt to convince her the Jedi's time had ended. When Rey learned the truth about Luke and Ben's falling out, Luke was inspired by Rey's hope to reconnect himself to the Force. He projected himself across the galaxy to distract Kylo Ren, giving the rebels the ability to escape. Luke then passed away, but not before inspiring the galaxy to continue the Resistance thanks to his sacrifice.
