My prior role was thrust upon me by circumstance. I am in no way divine.
— Liu Kang

Liu Kang is a major character in the Mortal Kombat video game series. He is the Grand Champion of Mortal Kombat and one of the chosen protectors of Earthrealm. During Kronika's assault on the timeline, he became the God of Fire and the Keeper of Time after defeating her.

Orphaned at a very young age, Liu Kang was raised as a Shaolin monk. The other monks recognized his potential as a contender for the Mortal Kombat tournament and rigorously trained him for this task. Raiden understood that Liu Kang was Earthrealm's best hope of resisting Outworld and introduced him to Bo' Rai Cho to further his development. Once fully trained, Liu Kang became the Shaolin's representative in Mortal Kombat, ultimately becoming its grand champion after defeating the sorcerer Shang Tsung.

Afterward, he would defend Earthrealm from Shang Tsung's master, Shao Kahn, and the evil god Shinnok. This victory wasn’t to last, as Shang Tsung with the assistance of Quan Chi killed him and took his soul. After Shang was killed by Raiden, Liu Kang's soul was released and would continue to aid his allies while his body was resurrected by a corrupted Raiden. Liu Kang’s body was present at the Battle of Armageddon, where it killed Shang Tsung before being killed himself.

In the second timeline created by Raiden, Liu Kang's history largely remained the same up until Shao Kahn's invasion of Earthrealm. Due to changes Raiden made, Liu Kang's love interest Kitana died, leading to Liu Kang becoming bitter towards him. Believing Raiden to have gone mad, he turned on his former mentor, who was forced to kill him in self-defense. In death, he became one of Quan Chi's Revenants.

As a Revenant, he fought as one of Shinnok's minions and became the new ruler of the Netherrealm after his master's death. During Kronika's attempt to create a new timeline, he sided with her to gain revenge on Raiden. Meanwhile, a past version of Liu Kang along with other warriors was brought into the present. Past Raiden would fuse himself along with the souls of Revenant and pat Liu Kang, turning him into a God of Fire and granting him the power needed to defeat Kronika and an empowered Shang Tsung.

As the new Keeper of Time, Liu Kang attempted to create a new peaceful timeline but found his efforts thwarted by a version of Shang Tsung from an alternate timeline where he was defeated. In the end, Liu Kang defeated Titan Shang Tsung with aid from Titan versions of his allies from other timelines, returning some peace to his own.
