Eli, most commonly known by the codename Liquid Snake, is the main antagonist of Metal Gear Solid. As the cloned brother of Solid Snake, Liquid's inferiority complex drives him to surpass his father, Big Boss, the world's greatest soldier.
Eli was cloned from the legendary soldier Big Boss by the Patriots, a shadowy organization that sought global dominance. Raised in England, Eli was told he was an inferior clone to his brother, the man who would become Solid Snake. At age twelve, Eli escaped from his handlers in Central Africa and formed a militia of war orphans. He became a significant threat to the locals before being captured by Venom Snake, Big Boss's doppelgänger, and held at Venom's headquarters.
Eli formed a bond with the psychic child Tretij Rebenok, who was drawn to Eli's hatred of Big Boss. Eli escaped and was presumed dead by Venom. Returning to England and the Patriots' influence, Eli grew up to become an accomplished special forces soldier. He assumed command of FOXHOUND, an elite counter-terrorism unit of the United States Army, earning his codename.
Following the counsel of his second-in-command, Revolver Ocelot, Liquid orchestrated an insurrection, seizing control of a nuclear weapons depot with FOXHOUND. His ultimate goal was to transform the depot, and eventually the world, into a sanctuary for soldiers, echoing Big Boss's own dreams before his death. Solid Snake was deployed to quell the uprising. After multiple intense battles with his clone, Liquid was killed by an assassination virus inside Snake.
