Katara is a major character in the Avatar franchise. She is the last surviving waterbender of the Fire Nation massacre of the Southern Water Tribe and the wife of Avatar Aang. Caring and motherly towards her friends, she protects them with fierce determination from anyone who seeks to harm them.
Katara lost her mother at a young age to the Fire Nation, and with her father leaving to participate in the Hundred Year War, she wad forced to take care of herself and her younger brother Sokka. One day while fishing, Katara and Sokka found Aang stuck in an iceberg, who revealed himself to be the last surviving airbender. Although Sokka was suspicious of Aang, Katara immediately trusted him and soon found out that he was the Avatar.
After rescuing Aang from Zuko, Katara and Sokka joined him in his journey to master the four elements and put an end to the Fire Nation's imperialistic ambitions. Over the course of these adventures, Katara went to the Northern Water Tribe with her friends, studying under waterbening master Pakku to increase her own talent as a bender. She also tracked her mother's killer down, ultimately sparing him out of pity and digust, and developed a close relationship with Aang. After the end of the Hundred Years War, Aang and Katara engaged in a romantic relationship, later marrying and having three children. Katara would eventually outlive her husband, who died from complications related to being frozen in the iceberg. In her old age, she became a mentor to Korra, the next Avatar.
