John Carter of Mars is one of the main characters of the Barsoom stories written by Edgar Rice Burroughs. He is a Confederate Civil War veteran who was transported to Mars and became a warlord, uniting the native population under his rule and fathering two children who would become heroes in their own right.

While prospecting the hills of Arizona, Carter ran afoul of the local Apache tribe. In an attempt to escape their wrath, he hid inside a cave, which somehow caused him to astrally project into an identical body on Mars, which the natives called Barsoom. He soon fell in with a tribe of nomadic Martians called the Thraks and used his newfound superhuman physicality, courtesy of Mars’ lower gravity and atmosphere, to earn their respect.

Subsequently, the Thraks capture Dejah Toris, a humanoid red Martian and Princess of Helium. After returning her to Helium, Carter became embroiled in a conflict between the green and red Martian and fell in love with Dejah, becoming Prince of Helium. For nine years they ruled, though their union was cut short when Carter had to sacrifice himself to repair Mars’ atmosphere and was returned to his body on Earth, mere moments after he was brought to Mars.

Carter would eventually return to the red planet and learn how to master astral projection, allowing him to travel between his planets. Through conquest, Carter would be eventually declared Warlord of Barsoom. He would have two children with Dejah, Carthoris and Tara, who would go on adventures of their own.
