I don't take orders from anybody other than the President of the United States. Now, move.
— Jack Bauer

Jack Bauer was a retired American serviceman and a former federal agent, who was responsible for saving numerous American citizens from potentially devastating terrorist attacks on more than one occasion. He took a leadership role in various covert and undercover missions, and served as both CTU Director and Director of Field Operations at CTU Los Angeles.

Before he became an agent for CTU, Bauer served in the United States Army as part of the United States Army Special Forces (the Green Berets), becoming a spec-ops training instructor. Through invitation by his mentor, Bauer joined Delta Force and rose through the ranks to become a captain of the unit. While in the Green Berets, Bauer saw action in the Persian Gulf region; and as a Delta operative, took part in classified missions all over the world, many of them in the Balkan countries in Eastern Europe including Operation Nightfall to take out terrorist leader Victor Drazen. Bauer's decorations included the Purple Heart and Silver Star. Eventually, Jack ended his term of active duty, but remained a reserve officer in Delta Force and was periodically reactivated to lead critical missions. After his term of duty, Jack attended the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department Special Weapons and Tactics school and joined the Los Angeles Police Department as a SWAT specialist.

His official involvement with the Counter Terrorist Unit started in the early 2000s while he was "on loan" to the Central Intelligence Agency and had come across the newly burgeoning unit in the middle of a CIA operation. Despite his initial skepticism, Jack took part in the unit's successful effort in preventing a bombing of a religious conference attended by world leaders. On Jack's first official day of employment, he was assigned to protect a defector from the Irish Republican Army, successfully fending off assassins on the defector's tail. Over the next few years, Jack took part in many more anti-terrorism operations, several of which were declassified following the 9/11 attacks.

The anti-terrorism career of Bauer really took off on the day of the California Presidential Primary circa 2002, preventing the assassination of Senator (Presidential candidate) David Palmer and rescuing his wife Teri and daughter Kim from a kidnapping - both of which were orchestrated by Drazen and his collaborators within the US. Although successful with these events, the day ended tragically for Bauer upon the murder of his wife. Years later after this event, Jack and CTU - sometimes with Jack as CTU leader and other times not - would later prevent: two attempted nuclear bomb attacks on Los Angeles, two biological terror attacks against the US, a series of chemical terror attacks against the US, a drone attack in London, attempted Presidential assassinations, and attempts to ignite war between the US and another country, all the while dismantling government conspiracies in the process.

Bauer is best known as an unconventional operative both in the field and behind closed doors. His kill count against terrorists is very high (about 300+) and his emotional volatility shows whenever he uses 'enhanced interrogation techniques' on suspects captured by CTU. He has also shown to be a hardened survivor - he is able to survive long stints as either a prisoner or a fugitive, protect himself from torture inflicted upon him and is able to survive being infected by a viral pathogen for as long as he could.
