Hoyt's privateers are an antagonistic faction in the first-person shooter video game Far Cry 3. A hardened paramilitary organization, the privateers serve the criminal interests of their ruthless leader, Hoyt Volker.
Hoyt Volker was the son of a wealthy mining magnate in Apartheid-era South Africa. Hoyt's father was cruel and abusive, instilling in Hoyt a desire to surpass him. Hoyt murdered his father and set out to amass wealth and influence at any cost. He joined a band of pirates and quickly rose through its ranks before overthrowing its leader and seizing control for himself. Under his leadership, the band was transformed into an organized paramilitary force.
Hoyt established his headquarters in the lawless Rook Islands and became a prolific trafficker of drugs, weapons, and slaves. His operation was resisted by the islands' native inhabitants, the Rakyat. Among them was a young warrior, Vaas Montenegro, who had succumbed to Hoyt's drugs. Recognizing Vaas's potential, Hoyt offered him power in exchange for loyalty. Vaas accepted and was made the leader of a group of pirates tasked with combating the Rakyat.
In 2012, Vaas captured a group of vacationing Americans, intending to sell them into slavery. However, one of the captives, Jason Brody, escaped. Jason joined forces with the Rakyat to rescue his friends by taking down Vaas and Hoyt. After killing Vaas, Jason infiltrated the privateers, sabotaged the organization from within, and killed Hoyt in a knife fight. With their leader dead, the privateers splintered, leaving their criminal empire in ruins.
