The 1st Attack Squad, nicknamed the Howling Commandos, was a United States Army Rangers combat unit lead by former US Army Luitenant Nicholas "Nick" Fury serving underneath General Samuel "Happy Sam" Sawyer's "Able" Company during the Second World War. They and the Second Attack Squad (nicknamed "Maulers") were stationed in London were stationed in a military base in England to fight specialized missions and primarily, but not exclusively, operated in the European theater.
The Howling Commandos' earliest assignment occurred in the autumn of 1942. They were to recover British rocket scientist Dr. MacMillan from a German military base in occupied Norway. Their success brought the attention of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who incorporated the unit into the British Army, and given the title of "Commandos".
After the war the unit was disbanded but later reunited for the Korean War, where Fury was promoted to luitenant, and the Vietnam War. The Howlers left a lasting legacy with several other elite United States Army and SHIELD units taking their mantle.
