Clinton Barton, also known as Hawkeye, was an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. who parterned with spy Natasha "Black Widow" Romanoff on several missions. The duo were even tasked with taking down the Hulk, with the pair nearly succeeding. After the mission, Clint discovered that Black Widow was preparing to betray S.H.I.E.L.D. by passing along information to the criminal organisation HYDRA. She framed him for the crime, and he was apprehended and imprisoned for his "crimes" in the Vault.
During the mass breakout at the Vault, Clint assists Iron Man in defeating several criminals released before fleeing the scene. The rest of the Avengers attempt to capture him, but he escapes their clutches and continues his hunt for Black Widow. He eventually captures her and intends to hand her in to clear his name, but his plan is stopped when the Leader takes control of them. Hawkeye and the Hulk team up to release the Avengers from his control, and after several offers, the pair join the Avengers officially.
