I have an intelligence of six, I know what I'm doing.
— Grog Strongjaw

Raised by his uncle Kevdak, Grog Strongjaw was a proud member of the Herd of Storms, an infamous raiding band that wreaked havoc across Exandria. Grog was known for his exceptional strength and ferocious temper in a fight, and he racked up many kills in his time with the group, but a chance encounter led to a change of heart for the goliath. One day, the Herd came upon a helpless old gnome, and while his comrades intended to slaughter the man, Grog took pity on him, actively putting himself between him and the herd. This act of apparent weakness enraged Kevdak, who savagely beat Grog, leaving him for dead and exiling him from the herd. Grog's act of kindness was rewarded in turn, as the gnome, Willhand Trickfoot, sent his great-grandaughter, Pike, to heal him using her abilities as a cleric.

Admitted as an honorary member of the Trickfoot family, Grog forged a close friendship with Pike, with the two often setting out on adventures together. These adventures eventually led to Grog joining the Wing and befriending Scanlan Shorthalt, a gnome bard, and the two struck up a fast camaraderie, eventually leaving the surviving members of the Wing to join with several other heroes in a new group. This group became Vox Machina, with Grog eventually inviting Pike to join. He would later play a major role in the group's rise to fame after accidentally uncovering the treasure horde of the blue dragon Brimscythe, who flew into a rage and was subsequently killed by Vox Machina after a lengthy battle. This victory made the party heroes to the people of Emon, earning their own keep in the process.
