“ | The terror, in its truest sense, is not a static state but rather a dynamic one. It is the sublime moment which shining hope turns to utter despair. Did you enjoy that? The tantalizing flavor of fresh terror and bloody death.

Gilles de Rai is a Servant from the Fate franchise, first appearing in the light novel Fate/Zero. As a Caster-class Servant, Gilles represents the child murderer and occultist he became after the execution of Jeanne d'Arc. Believing God had abandoned Jeanne, who he fervently followed into battle, Gilles dedicated himself to blaspheming against Him as revenge. He is loosely based on the real-life French war hero and alleged serial killer of the same name.
In life, Gilles was a pious French nobleman and war hero who gained fame after aiding Jeanne d'Arc in recapturing Orleans during the Hundred Years War. Gilles loved Jeanne and viewed her as proof of God's existence. When Jeanne was captured by the English and executed on accusations of heresy, Gilles fell into deep despair, and his faith in God started to crumble. With his coffers nearly depleted, he had to rely on his friend and occultist François Prelati for financial aid. Gilles became involved in Prelati's rituals and soon started to abduct young boys from the area of his domain, raping and slaughtering them by the hundreds. When the realm learned of his crimes, Gilles was tried and executed by his political rivals, though they only did so to secure their power.
Having accomplished great deeds in life, Gilles' essence ascended to the Throne of Heroes and became a Heroic Spirit. During the Fourth Fuyuki Holy Grail War, he was summoned by Ryuunosuke Uryuu, though was more focused on continuing his murders than obtaining the Greater Grail. He would eventually be killed along with his Master. Gilles was also summoned back in 1431 and given a Holy Grail by Lev Lainur as part of his plan to destroy human history. Using the Holy Grail, Gilles created Jeanne d'Arc Alter, a dark copy of the real Saint that embodied Gilles' view of the perfect Jeanne. Both he and Jeanne Alter were killed by Ritsuka Fujimaru and the real Jeanne. Afterwards, Gilles was summoned by Ritsuka to aid them in Grand Orders.
