The Frankish power, it must be remembered, was under Charles Martel at the height of its greatness as a purely Frankish power. It was, in everything but formal titles, fully the peer of the Empire.
— The Patriciate of Pippin by Edward Augustus Freeman

A Frankish warrior was a fighter for the Franks, one of the most influential peoples in the history of Europe. Frankish warriors emerged at the turning point between the fading Roman world and the Early Middle Ages, and their evolution from tribal raiders to disciplined feudal troops would help define medieval warfare.

The Franks began as loose confederations of Germanic tribes during the 3rd and 4th centuries. Early Frankish warriors fought as raiders with spears, shields, and throwing axes. They earned a reputation for plundering and for serving as mercenaries in Roman armies. When the Western Roman Empire collapsed, the Franks united under Clovis I of the Merovingian dynasty and expanded, with their warriors conquering most of Gaul.

In the 8th and 9th centuries, the Frankish warrior reached its zenith under the reign of Charlemagne and his Carolingian dynasty. Elite soldiers, often mounted and armored, became the core of Charlemagne’s army, supported by the feudal system of land grants in exchange for military service. Frankish armies fought in campaigns stretching from Spain to Saxony, enforcing Charlemagne’s vision of a Christian empire.

The Frankish warrior's decline came with the fragmentation of the Carolingian Empire after Charlemagne’s death. By the 10th century, Viking raids, Magyar incursions, and internal divisions had eroded centralized power. Local lords were dominant, and the Frankish warrior tradition dissolved into a broader feudal noble class. Frankish warriors ceased to exist as a class, yet their legacy lived on in the European knight that dominated the High Middle Ages.

Battle vs. Sōhei (by Macleanman4)[]

A sohei monk sits on a tree stump, meditating, when a frank bursts from the dense tree line. The sohei bows in respect. The frank takes this as a challange and attacks him with the iron spear. The sohei dodges these attacks and followsa them up with a seris of punches, knocking the frank down. The sohei retreats into the forest, grabbing and sheathing his Tachi and picking up his Daikyu. The frank drops his spear, loads his sling, and fires, hitting the sohei in the face. His vision blured, the sohei fires two arrows and misses. The frank charges with his longsword in one hand and his club in the other. The sohei unsheathes his blade in just enough time to block the franks attacks. Soon, the frank hits him in the side of the head with his club and stabs his sword arm. The sohei picks up his naginata and they attack eachother. The sohei lops off the franks club arm, then his sword arm, and finally his head. The sohei bows again, and goes off to meditate.

Expert's Opinion[]

The sohei won because of a supierly accurate long ranged weapon, and a devestating mid ranged weapon.
