Enkidu is a figure from Mesopotamian mythology who features in The Epic of Gilgamesh. A beastly man from the wilderness, Enkidu was created by the gods to humble Gilgamesh and eventually became his greatest friend.
The city of Uruk was ruled by a tyrannical and arrogant king named Gilgamesh. To save the people from the king, the gods created Enkidu, an animalistic man who could rival Gilgamesh's demigod strength. Shamhat, a sacred prostitute, seduced Enkidu, civilized him, and taught him the ways of humanity. She convinced Enkidu to go fight Gilgamesh to protect the people of Uruk. Enkidu encountered Gilgamesh attempting to invoke droit du seigneur on a bride and attacked him. The pair fought an intense battle which Gilgamesh barely won, earning each other's respect.
Now friends, the pair went on a journey together and slew Humbaba, a monstrous giant. Gilgamesh eventually earned the attention of Ishtar, the goddess of love, who demanded that Gilgamesh become her consort. Gilgamesh refused, and Ishtar sent the mighty Bull of Heaven to kill the two. The pair slew the Bull, but the gods sentenced Gilgamesh to die for the blasphemous act. Enkidu took Gilgamesh's place and was killed by disease.
