Emus are little more than feathered stomachs borne on mighty legs and ruled by a tiny brain. If an emu wants one of your sandwiches, he will get it, and then run away. He cannot help you with your sudoku.
— Richard Fortey

The emu is a flightless bird living on the continent of Australia. Following WWI, former Australian soldiers were given land to use as farms. When the Great Depression hit, the soldier-farmers began growing tons of wheat due to the promises o9f the government to provide subsidies. Soon, the emu's migratory period kicked in and they began to settle in the farming lands and eat the crops. A group of farmers would take their concerns to the Minister of Defense, who requested machine guns to deal with the Emus. The defense minister agreed to deploy the military to cull the emus.

The operation began on November 2nd, 1932 with the arrival of military forces in Campion. They tried to fire upon the Emus but they fled outside the effective range. The Australian army failed to kill more then a handful of the birds. They ended up putting an end to the operation, only to start it back up later, where they continued to fail to kill more Emus. They would eventually end up killing 986 birds with 9,860 rounds of ammunition and injuring 2500 more.
