I started this war killing Germans in Africa. Then France. Then Belgium. Now I'm killing Germans in Germany. It will end, soon. But before it does, a lot more people gotta die.
— Don Collier

A veteran of World War I, Donald "Wardaddy" Collier is the commander of the Fury, an M4A2 Sherman tank operating in the German theater of World War II. When his assistant driver "Red" is killed in action, Collier enlists the private Norman Ellison to serve instead. As Norman's lack of experience results in several fatal encounters, Collier forces Ellison to execute a prisoner to teach him brutality and viciousness.

Collier eventually becomes the platoon's commander via in-field promotion, and go to occupy a small crossroads. After the rest of their platoon is destroyed in an ambush, Collier convinces his men to continue the mission alone. The Fury is disabled by a mine, and Ellison scouts to see a large platoon of German infantry. The crew stage a last stand to fight the platoon, where all of them but Collier and Norman die. As the Nazis close in and Collier runs out of ammo, he encourages Norman to escape. He dies covering Norman's escape, in the husk of the Fury.
