Deadliest Fiction Wiki

We gaze continually at the world and it grows dull in our perceptions. Yet seen from another's vantage point, as if new, it may still take the breath away.
— Doctor Manhattan

Doctor Manhattan, real name Dr. Jonathan Osterman, was a nuclear physicist and superhero. As the only superhuman, Doctor Manhattan had a profound effect on the Cold War and was viewed by many as a living weapon of mass destruction.

Originally a normal scientist, Osterman was locked inside a generator as it was being activated, resulting in his 'intrinsic field' being removed and his body disintegrated, though his consciousness survived. Overtime, Osterman managed to recreate a new body and found that he had gained the ability to manipulate the world around him and see into the past and future. For reasons unknown, he began to work for the United States government and gained the code name of Doctor Manhattan.

During an interview, he was ambushed by a reporter who accused him of causing cancer in his former pierce. Desiring isolation, Manhattan teleported himself to Mars leading to the Soviet Union invading Afganistan, emboldened by his absence. Eventually, he brought Laurie Juspeczyk, the second Silk Specter, to him to discuss why he should aid humanity and is ultimately convinced. Ultimately, Manhattan along with his former teammates were unsuccessful in stopping Adrian Veidt, also known as Ozymandius, from enacting his plan to prevent World War 3, which resulted in multiple deaths in New York City. Agreeing to stay quiet and allow Ozymandius' plan to continue, even killing Rorschach to keep him from exposing the plot, Manhattan decided to travel to a new galaxy.

Ozymandius' plot did not last, however, and through the efforts of the late Rorschach was exposed to the public. In Manhattan's absence, tensions between the United States and Soviet Union once again escalted, leading to humanity's extiction in nuclear fire.

Manhattan eventually found himself inside Prime Earth and began to observe it and making fundamental changes to its history as an experement, resulting in the Age of Heroes arriving much later. He would eventually reveal himself to and clash with the world's heroes before being confronted by Ozymandius and the Watchmen's successors who tried to convince him to undo the effects of World War 3. Intially, he refused, having grown disinterested in human afairs. But after a confrontation with Superman, Manhattan became inspired to use his powers to benifits humanity. Returning to his home dimension, Manhattan undid the destruction caused by the war before passing on his powers to the son of Owlman and Silk Specter whom he named 'Clark', in honor of Superman, and peacefully passing on.
