A cadet nobleman in the French Royal Army, Cyrano de Bergerac is a renowned and prideful playwright in addition to his soldierly activities. Despite the praise of his talents with sword and quill, Cyrano's large nose gives him great self-esteem issues when it comes to courting his longtime unrequited love interest Roxane. While lamenting his misfortune of falling for a beautiful and intellectual woman with his looks, Cyrano discovers that a new recruit in his division, Christian de Neuvillette, has become the target of Roxanne's affections. He agrees to protect him, and upon meeting the equally brash and lovestruck young man, comes up with a plan to express his love; he will write letters on Christian's behalf, with the young soldier acting as his stand-in with Roxanne.
Despite the intervention of the manipulative Count de Guiche, who also seeks to marry Roxane, the courtship of Christian and Roxane results in a secret marriage. De Guiche learns of the marriage, and in retaliation orders Cyrano's company of soldiers to the frontlines. Cyrano swears to write to make Christian write to Roxane when he cannot promise to keep him safe. True to his words, Cyrano writes his daily letters to Roxane, wooing Roxane off his words alone just as Christian dies in battle. In order to protect her image of Christian, Cyrano decides not to tell Roxane the truth, a secret he keeps until his dying day 15 years later, where Cyrano finally confesses his love for Roxane and she her love for him.
