Born into a noble house of Serenno, Count Dooku developed a potent and curious usage of the Force early on in his childhood, which led his family to willingly surrender him to the Jedi Order (in the original Legends continuity). Dooku was personally chosen as a Padawan to study under Grandmaster Yoda of the Jedi Order, and the young Jedi was noted for his exceptional growth in skill with The Force and with a lightsaber, garnering renown and praise from his peers throughout his years as a Jedi, eventually bringing future Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn under his tutelage. Despite the positivity surrounding him and his position however, Dooku grew more disillusioned with the Jedi Order and the Republic as time went on due to a number of degrading factors, such as the rash and catastrophic missions young and experienced Jedi alike were sent on at the time, and the corruption of the Republic Senate.
These tensions would come to a head after his student Qui-Gon was killed by the Sith Assassin Darth Maul, the first to resurface in centuries, pushing Dooku to resign from the Jedi Order and distance himself. Dooku's growing uncertainty and anger was sensed by Darth Sidious, now acting as Chancellor Palpatine, who began to manipulate the disheartened Jedi after worming his way into the Count's circle, becoming a close confident of his. In the midst of a conversation related to the events of the Naboo Crisis, Dooku had brought up a vow of revenge against the remaining Sith Lord responsible for his Padawan's death, but then explained that he had another idea; to align himself with the Sith in order to reforge a better galaxy. While not immediate, Sidious confronted Dooku and easily turned the elder Jedi to his cause, taking him as his new apprentice; Darth Tyranus.
Under the guideship of Sidious, Dooku would begin to string the pieces of the coming Clone Wars together and took various steps to ensure it would be freely manipulatable by the Sith. He began influencing various star systems and corporate polities into discussing the potential of a future Separatist Alliance, and orchestrated a major bounty hunt which saw bounty hunter Jango Fett dispose of Dooku's former apprentice and dark jedi Komari Vosa, signifying him as the prime candidate for the Republic's Clone Army. Although the Separatist conspiracy was eventually revealed, Dooku continued forward with the plan and brought his various connections to Geonosis, where the Confederacy of Independent Systems was officially established, however their plans were nearly foiled by the Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi and his padawan Anakin Skywalker. The Clone Wars began with the arrival of the Jedi and later the Clones as they faced off against the Separatist Droid Army in the Battle of Geonosis. Dooku engaged in a lightsaber duel against Obi-Wan and Anakin, and then Yoda when the Grandmaster had come to their aid, however he was able to escape.
Throughout the war, Dooku held emergency power as the head of state of the Confederacy and slew several Jedi, while taking on various Jedi Hunters and Sith Acolytes under his apprenticeship to lower the number of Jedi throughout the war, such as General Grievous and Asajj Ventress. In 19 BBY, nearing the end of the war, Dooku was present during the Battle of Coruscant on the Invisible Hand Providence-Class carrier/destroyer, holding Supreme Chancellor Palpatine hostage. When Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi fought their way through the ship to Dooku, they engaged him in a lightsaber duel, Anakin securing the victory after Kenobi was immobilized. Palpatine instructed Anakin to kill Dooku, sending the latter into shock, but he did not plead for his life. After brief hesitation and urgence from Palpatine, Anakin slew Dooku, ending the fallen Jedi's reign and sealing the fate of the Confederacy, and the Republic.
