Born Edward Blake in New York City, The Comedian began his career as a costumed adventurer in the 1930's. He made a name for himself by thwarting the efforts of various New York crime families. By the time he had joined the Minutemen, Blake had eliminated almost all of the organized crime in New York's harbor districts. As a member of the Minutemen, the Comedian earned a reputation for stealing money from crime scenes and viciously beating his targets. Blake was expelled from the Minutemen, but found his true calling afterwards as an agent for the government. He participated in World War II and the Vietnam War, committing various atrocities in the name of the United States.
By the late 1960's, The Comedian had joined another group of costumed superheroes, the Crimefighters. Unlike with the Minutemen, the Comedian shot down the idea right away. He continued his service as a g-man, where he was hired to kill Bobby Kennedy, Bob Woodward, and Carl Bernstein to ensure the successful reelection of Richard Nixon. While on mission killing Marxist revolutionaries in South America, the Comedian discovered the activities of Adrian Veidt, his old comrade Ozymandias. Distraught at Veidt's plan to kill millions to unite humanity under a single cause, the Comedian attempted to warn his old nemesis Moloch the Mystic of the plan. Veidt arrived at the Comedian's apartment later that week, throwing him out the window to his death. He is briefly brought back to life by Doctor Manhattan and brought to Prime Earth, where he attempts to kill Ozymandias for revenge. He ambushes Veidt, but the latter escapes and the Comedian fights his way through minor supervillains to reach him. The Comedian nearly gets his revenge until Lex Luthor sends him back to his home dimension during his freefall to death.
