Casca is a major supporting character in the manga Berserk. The love interest of the protagonist Guts, Casca was a mercenary commander before the tragic slaughter of her comrades rendered her traumatized and infantile.
As a peasant girl, Casca was saved from a would-be rapist by Griffith, a mercenary leader. Entranced by her savior, Casca joined Griffith's army, the Band of the Hawk, and eventually became his second-in-command. In their travels, the Hawks encountered a young mercenary named Guts, whom Griffith took an interest in. Although initially jealous, Casca fought alongside Guts as the Hawks put an end to a hundred-year war between the nations of Tudor and Midland, developing a romantic relationship with him in the process. Afterward, Guts left the Hawks, driving Griffith into anguish. Griffith slept with the King of Midland's daughter, leading to his imprisonment and torture. Casca led the Hawks until Guts returned.
The Hawks rescued Griffith but discovered their leader had become a broken man. In utter despair, Griffith took his last chance for power and sacrificed the Hawks to demons, leaving Casca and Guts as the only survivors. Traumatized by the experience, Casca became an infantile shell of a person. Guts left Casca in the care of the blacksmith Godot when he set off on his quest for revenge against Griffith. Eventually, with the help of the ruler of the elves, Guts and his new companions were able to mend Casca's fractured mind and restore her to her former self.
